Are Heart Murmurs Possible In An Active 18 Year Old?

default
Posted on Mon, 24 Aug 2015
Question: Hi my grand-daughter, has had to have a medical check to achieve the final pass for her future career, she is just 18, very active does much exercise, intense dance-work. At the health check yesterday all other signs were good/normal, but a doctor has said she has a heart murmer, and until checked out he will not give her the certificate she needs. What is the likely cause and treatment? He also said he had referred many, many, people to hospital for further checks, in his working life and only one had required further treatment. Is it possible to have a second opinion or even the tests done privately. Does she need to be in the depths of despair?

Brief Answer:
There is a need for echocardiography

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Actually in her age majority of heart murmurs are benign, they are functional, and there is not any underlying disease.
Anyway, the only way to be sure a 100% is echocardiography.
If there are long waiting lists in your local hospital, you can went to a private hospital and have an echocardiography done. If it comes back normal, then there is nothing to worry. It will mean she is healthy.

Take care
