Question: I have total knee replacement in both knees that are now 16 years old, i am now 78.
They are now showing wear and some loosening. What are the the odds of further complications over say the next ten years if i leave them alone? or if i have replacement revision surgery?

Brief Answer:
Best to go ahead with revision surgery at the earliest

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. There are 3 major reasons why we go for revision surgery, that entails removal of an old prosthesis and replacing it with a new one:

1. The loose or weakened old prosthesis can cause irreeversible damage to the surrounding bone structure, making it close to impossible to implant a new device in the future and also resulting in pain, reduced mobility or even possibly a complete loss of mobility

2. Reduce pain that may have started occuring

3. You may have noticed a reduction in mobility as compared to what it was after the replacement

If you delay the surgery for even a year, you can expect all of the above 3 listed complications to take place. Please discuss the best time to go ahead with the surgery and do not do yourself such harm just due to lack of knowledge. Now you know, so I would urge you to consider revision surgery at the earliest.

Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
