Are Antibiotics Necessary After An HSG Test?

default
Posted on Wed, 7 Oct 2015
Question: HI, I had an HSG test done with xray yesterday. I was given meftal half hour before. The procedure was not severely painful, but it was painful. There was some bleeding. I was advised to take meftal last night if pain persisted. I'm fine today. I've also been asked not to have intercourse till next period.
I read on online forums antibiotics are given for HSg. If antibiotic is not taken, will it cause problem? And why should I refrain from intercourse for two weeks (we are trying to get pregnant), will it cause infection?

Brief Answer:
No need to avoid intercourse for 2 weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Generally, antibiotics are not needed after the procedure, if the procedure was uneventful and went smoothly.
SO there should be no problem.
There is no reason to refrain from sex for 2 weeks.
You should avoid sex for 3 - 4 days, just to avoid a risk of infection / pain / cramping / spotting.
After 3 - 4 days, you can definitely remain active sexually.
All the best.

Any particular reason for avoiding intercourse till next period?
Background info:This is a reputed fertility clinic in the city. I'm going there for the past 3 months, 12th day after my period, for follicle study, medicine (ovafar) and injection (sifassi). All of their tests of my husband and myself are normal. But I haven't been able to conceive. Which is why HSG & xray was done (result- both tubes patent). (these were required for HSG - 20 cc syringe, gloves, meftal)

I read on online forums it's good to have intercourse after HSG before nxt period, as tubes are clean. So any particular reason for avoiding intercourse, because I want to try before next cycle.

Brief Answer:
Again, repeat - no reason to avoid intercourse.

Detailed Answer:
As I said, there is no reason to avoid intercourse .
I mentioned that clearly.
You can resume intercourse within 3- 4 days.
I really do not know why your clinic has advised you to refrain from having intercourse until the next period.
THere is no such guideline advised.
I hope I am clear now ?

Thank you. Also I am still bleeding on and off. Yesterday there were spots of blood in my undergarment. This morning too, slightly more. My HSG was done on Monday. Is this normal?
