Are Foracort Inhalational Rotacaps Safe To Take During Third Trimester?

Posted on Tue, 13 Oct 2015
Question: hi,
I am in my 29th week of pregnancy (second child). I got high fever (101) on 13th September, my doctor suggested to use dolo 650 thrice a day. I followed it for three days and the fever didn't come to normal. After taking the medicine for 4 to 5 hours, i was fine and then I used to get again fever around 100F. I have also got cough, mostly dry cough with wheezing. No other symptoms such as runny nose, body pains, throat pain etc... Just plain cough, it aggravates night time when I go to bed.
I got Urine test done and bacteria showed up in the test. My doctor asked me to stop taking dolo 650 and prescribed Lanol-ER 650, 4 times a day and Almox-500mg thrice a day for five days. The course completed just yesterday, and so far my temperature is in control. Before starting the antibiotics, I have taken Urine culture test, and the report came negative.
For cough, she prescribed Cetrizine 10mg one tablet at bed time for three days and TusQ-X three times a day. I have used them but my cough is still the same.
I have met a pulmonologist yesterday, he said the lungs are clear. This must be acute bronchitis, couple of weeks back my husband got the same and probably I might have taken it from him. The doctor prescribed 'Ascoril' cough syrup thrice a day for three days and 'Foracort rotacaps 200' to inhale thrice a day for a week. (My husband had used the same medication, it worked for him)
I am using Ascoril syrup but I am concerned about using Foracort. I have never used it before. Please suggest.

Brief Answer:
Rotacaps are safe.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Foracort inhalational rotacaps are a safe medicine to use in third trimester. Rotacaps mostly have a local anti inflammatory effect on the respiratory tract and minimal amount is absorbed orally that goes in systemic circulation.
Taking these for short duration like 5-7 days will not harm the baby in any way.
Some basic home remedies can improve your condition and prevent recurrence:
a) Drinking plenty of water or fruit juice to stay hydrated and keep throat moist.
b) Inhaling steam or use saline nasal spray to ease nasal congestion and drippy nose if any.
c) Staying away from household dust, pollens, powders, droplets, smoke, allergen substances etc.
d) Taking one teaspoon honey & tulsi juice in the morning or hot drink like milk at bed time is quite helpful.
e) Taking hot shower bath, sleep with an extra pillow under head and vitamin-C supplements are very much essential.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

thank you so much, doctor for that quick reply and for suggesting home remedies. I will try them. Can I also continue Ascoril for couple of days more?
The antibiotcs I have used are okay during pregnancy? Ofcourse my doctor is a wonderful person, she absolutely knows what suits me.
But I read from online sources that antibiotics and long course of dolo, other fever medicines are not good during pregnancy.

Brief Answer:
The medicines you used are safe.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
You can continue ascoril for a few more days. The antibiotics that you have used are also safe for use during pregnancy. Urine infection can cause a preterm labor so these medicines were absolutely necessary in your case.
Fever medicines should not be used for many weeks continuously as it can compromise the liver function but it is absolutely safe for use for a few days. No need to worry.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Sorry doctor, I forgot to mention. I am getting sharp pain in my right bum, center, thigh bone that connects the lower back. Not sure whether i am clear!
I have this pain only one side. I started having it from last 10days, it increased in last two days. I guess this must be because I was mostly sleeping on my right side.
I dont know this symtom has to anything with the fever I just had and cough.

Brief Answer:
Muscular pain likely.

Detailed Answer:
The pain in the lower back and hip region is not related to cough and fever. It is most likely a postural pain. Wear flat slippers and start taking calcium supplements regularly in addition to a calcium rich diet. Doing a hot compress will help in decreasing the pain.

sure doctor, I do recommend.
one advise, can I postpone using 'Foracort rotacaps 200' for couple of days and see if my cough subsides with natural remedies?
coughing is actually disturbing my sleep and at times i am getting slight pain in my ribs.
but if it is okay and that does not harm my baby then i can tolerate and try home remedies and Ascoril syrup for couple of days.
but if it is important to treat that otherwise that might turn into something else, then I would like to start Foracort from today itself. Please suggest. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
You can wait for a week.

Detailed Answer:
You can wait for a week and see if the natural remedies help you. In case the cough is persistent then do not hesitate to take rotacaps.
You can wait till the cough causes a lower abdominal pain or stress. The pain in ribs or sleep disturbance will not harm the baby in any way. In case there is any lower abdominal pain then it is better to start with rotacaps right away.
