Appendectomy Done. What Diet Should Be Taken To Get Cured Soon?

default
Posted on Fri, 22 Feb 2013
Question: Can you recommend a nutritional guide for assisting the body in its healing process after an appendectomy? My son is at a military hospital and is still dealing with the infection.
He will do the pills regime they recommend. We are simply looking for a nutritional/food regime to support their efforts.
I am open to Ayruvedic, juicing, vegan, fish, vegetarian and alternative nutritional input, but what ever is recommended has to be something he can get at the military base bx - he's in XXXXXXX
As his mother, I can only take your recommendations and pass them along. So please write as if you are writing to him.
To the best of my knowledge he is O positive. But he spent the first 3 to 5 years of his life as a vegan and refused meat as a child.
If anyone calls, plan to leave a message and I will contact you back as soon a possible. I am trying to leave the line open.

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

There are no dietary restrictions following appendicetomy. He can and should have a normal diet. The diet at his base should be a well balanced and nutritious one and the photograph that you sent suggests that he is in the best of health. Fortunately following laparscopic removal one is ambulatory and back to normal work faster then open surgery. Yes, in your son's case strenous exercises will have to be avoided for at least a month. The doctors will guide him on this.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction. Please feel free to revert back in case you need any clarifications or would like to add more facts to the case.

Wishing your son an early recovery.

Regards,

RKK

Thank you. It's good to know that there are no restrictions, but there are 2 main questions that still need answered:

1) "Can you recommend any specific fruit/veggies or Ayurvedic herbs to help stop the infection." The infection is everywhere. That the appendix gave out first is simply one part of a domino effect. I'm looking for food to flush the infection out of his body, or food to kill the infection that is still there.

2) "Can you recommend any specific fruit/veggies and Ayurvedic herbs to help the body heal the soft tissue quickly."

For example Spinach is great to eat to strengthen bones since it is high in iron, but it is bad to eat when a bone is broken and trying to mend. The oxalic acid in the spinach retards bone/calcium mending. It doesn't stop it, it simply slows it down. He doesn't have a broken bone. I am simply using a fundamental principle of nutrition that I know. I know bones. I don't know infections or soft tissue healing.

I know Pineapple and papaya provide enzymes as well as vitamin c, but is that all there is. Is there anything else that helps flush infections and heal/rebuild soft tissue. Would tumeric help? Would curry help? Or would cinnamon and cayenne pepper be better.

One person recommend high doses of Vitamin C to help the body flush the infections out, but they aren't a professional and I'm looking for professional advice. And, I'm not looking for more pills in the form of vitamin tablets. I'm looking for food/nutritional advice.

And the picture was at Christmas 40 days ago. Since then he went from eating normal, locally grown food, to eating government food - most of which is 2 years old. He also went from 3,500 ft to sea level and from cold winter to hot desert, and from real food to processed food. He went from running 1 mile a day to running 10 miles a day. Essentially, he's gone from one extreme to another in a short period of time.

Thank you and many blessings...

I appreciate all the advice so far, I simply have to keep going til I have a grocery list to give him so he can go shopping.

Hi,

Thank you for the update.

Appendicitis is infection of the appendix following blockage by some nut or seed in the food and not of the whole body. Hence I do not see your reason when you say "flush out the infection from the body". Your son is on the road to recovery.

It is good to know that he has been able to tolerate the extreme climates and strain on his body.

I am a firm believer of having a well balanced nutritious diet and believe in having your daily requirements of nutrients from food rather than medicine and vitamin pills. It for this reason I suggested that your son should have such a diet. He should be having something of every food item instead of only specific foods.

Since your son has recovered and has to do more strenous work he should be partaking from every food item. There are some natural vitamin preparations available in the market and, if you are very keen, then you can make them available to him. Even then I shall strees on a well balanced nutritious dier.

I hope I have provided you with the answers that you were looking for.

Wishing your son all the best.
