Hi XXXXXXX

Thank you for writing in.

Weight gain in second six months will be almost half the weight gain in first six months.

I understand your anxiety. But according to Indian standards it is quite normal.

Weight should double in first 5months and triple by one year of age. He is growing according to the scale. Height will be 75cm by 1 year. I think you should still wait and see.

Meanwhile please add home cooked non vegetarian, non spicy food in the diet for the baby. The diet you are giving is fine. Non veg will be better absorbed and XXXXXXX in nutrients and fibre. Adding fibre is the key to prevent difficult stool.

Passing hard stool is common in babies once they are started on complementary feeds. Give it in more acceptable way i.e., soft, semi-solid and liquid diet.

By one year of age you can also give egg and baby should be fed in what we call XXXXXXX patra which means it should contain everything what the family members eat (in less quantities).

Please don't worry about weight gain because it will take some time to shift from breast milk diet to complementary feeding.

Hope I've cleared your query.Feel free to ask if yo have any doubt. I'll be happy to help you.

Thank you

Hello Dr , Thank you for your reply.

We are pure vegitarian, so we cannot give either egg or non veg.

In vegitarian only, please suggest any other food to increase his weight

According to the scale, he should be atleast 9 kgs now, he is just 7 kgs only. As you mentioned weight should be tripled by 1 year. His birth weight is 3.5 kgs. so he should be 10.5 kgs by 1 year. He has already completed 9 months only 3 months to go for his birthday.

WE have done his urine test also, it is showing Muscus present, please advise.and suggest any other test i can do it for not gaining weight.

Hi XXXXXXX
I understood your problem,
The weight must have been at least 9 Kg by now.
But some babies stop gaining weight especially around 6-8 months of age as they won't be able to absorb properly from the new diet. They will be accustomed to breast milk diet.
It's important that you start complementary feeds one after another and gradually. It'll take some time to adjust and start gaining weight. In order to feed him, you will need to be extremely patient and would need to make the food look more attractive.

Since you can't give him egg or non veg, you can try following things.
-See to it that you cover all the nutrients in his diet- Carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals.
-For carbohydrates- Rice, Ragi cherry, other cereals,
-For Fats- you can add few drops of ghee, coconut oil in the food while preparing,
-For proteins, all types of pulses can be given,
-Fresh fruits, vegetables, greens give additional vitamins and essential nutrients.
Give soft, semi-solid, and liquids for better acceptability and proper absorption.
There is no need of any test now. He is absolutely normal.
Its your duty now to make his food more likeable and make him eat.
He will show improvement for sure. Don't worry.
Kindly write to me if you have any doubt. Feedback will be appreciated.
Wish you and your son good health.

Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing back.
You can give all fruits.
What you are giving is fine.
Don't add water to fruit juice. Carrot juice can also be given
Try to give fruit in mashed form so that he gets the fiber and other components in natural form. They help in easy passage through the gut.
Dry fruits can also be given but soak it in water to make it soft before giving.
Give sips of water whenever he demands for it and if you feel he is thirsty or notice dry lips and mouth.
Hope I've cleared your doubt.
Regards.
