Epilepsy is a condition characterized by a tendency to have recurrent seizures. Our brain cells communicate through highly regulated electrical impulses. Epilepsy is caused by uncontrolled bursts of electrical impulses in the brain cells. However, not everyone who has a seizure has epilepsy. Psychological problems and excessive stress can cause pseudoseizures that are not caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. High fever, alcohol, and drug abuse can also cause non-epileptic seizures. Most patients with epilepsy respond well to medications. Surgery may be required in few cases. Patient education and psychosocial support play an important role in treatment.

Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder characterized by recurrent, disordered, uncontrolled movements which may or may not result in loss of consciousness. Depending on the type of epilepsy some people may just stare in a blank manner while some may get true seizures. Incidence of epilepsy is most common among children and in older ages. About 50 million people worldwide have epilepsy. Epilepsy is usually controlled but not cured with medications. Epilepsy should be understood as a group of diseases in which the electrical activity of the brain is affected. Not all epilepsy syndromes are lifelong. Some epileptic syndromes occur at a particular age in childhood and get cured as the age advances. Epilepsy runs in families but it does not have any sexual preponderance.
Types of epilepsy
An epileptic seizure is a transient occurrence of signs and or symptoms due to abnormal excessive or synchronous neuronal activity in the brain. Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain characterized by an enduring predisposition to generate epileptic seizures and by the neurobiologic, cognitive, psychological, and social consequences of this condition. The definition of epilepsy requires the occurrence of at least one epileptic seizure.
Epilepsy and pregnancy
Years ago, women who had epilepsy were often discouraged from getting pregnant. Thanks to early and regular prenatal care. However, don't panic if you have a seizure while you're pregnant. Remember, there are many normal, healthy babies born to women who had seizures during their pregnancy.
Latest treatment of epilepsy
Main treatment options in epileptic patients include ? anti epileptic or convulsant medications, surgery, and vagus nerve stimulation. Ketogenic diet is especially effective in treating patients with child hood epilepsy and lennox- gastaut syndrome.
EEG and other tests in epilepsy
EEG records patient?s brain wave activity, in epilepsy the electrical activity of brain is disturbed. The pattern of brain wave activity may help in diagnosing seizure type.

Carbamazepine is often a drug of choice due to its low incidence of side effects. For children with epilepsy who are less than 6 years of age for the treatment of partial seizures, generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and mixed seizure patterns and for treating trigeminal neuralgia. It has also been demonstrated in drug trials to relieve symptoms associated with dural ectasia in indivduals with Marfan Syndrome.

Seizures associated with toxemia of pregnancy, epilepsy, or when abnormally low levels of magnesium may be a contributing factor in convulsions, such as in hypothyroidism or glomerulonephritis. For eclampsia, IV use is restricted to control of life- threatening seizures. Acute nephritis in children to control hypertension, encephalopathy, and seizures. Replacement therapy in magnesium deficiency. Adjunct in TPN. Laxative. Investigational: Inhibit premature labor (not a first-line agent). IV use as an adjunct to treat acute exacerbations of moderate to severe asthma in clients who respond poorly to beta agonists. IV use to reduce early mortality in clients with acute MI (is given as soon as possible and continued for 24-48 hr).
