Acute inflammation of the air passages within the lung. Most cases of acute bronchitis disappear within few days without lasting effects. Usually occurs after a sinus infection or common cold. Virus etiology is the most common cause of acute bronchitis.
Chronic Bronchitis
Chronic bronchitis is a long-term inflammation of the bronchi, which results in increased production of mucus, as well as other changes. It is generally considered one of the two forms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Diagnosis and Treatment of bronchitis
Bronchitis may be suspected in patients with an acute respiratory infection with cough; however, because many more serious diseases of the lower respiratory tract cause cough, bronchitis must be considered a diagnosis of exclusion. Spirometry or lung function test forms the mainstay of diagnosis. Oxygen, bronchodilators, antitussives, expectorants/ antitussives form the main stay of treatment in bronchitis.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Disease characterized by air flow limitation that is not fully reversible. COPD Includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Cigarette smoking and respiratory infections are most common causes of COPD.
