Dermatomyositis or Inflammation of Muscles
Dermatomyositis is a chronic inflammatory disease of skin and muscles along with patches of raised reddish or scaly rash. The rash can be on the bridge of the nose, around the eyes, or on sun-exposed areas of the neck and chest. Generally it is over the knuckles. When the inflammation of the muscle occurs without skin disease, the condition is known as Polymyositis. Dermatomyositis is one of a group of acquired muscle diseases called inflammatory myopathies. Dermatomyositis may occur at any age, but it mostly affects adults in their late 40s to early 60s or children between 5 and 15 years of age.
Muscle Cramps
A muscle that involuntarily contracts is called a spasm. If the spasm is forceful and sustained, it becomes a cramp. A muscle cramp is thus defined as an involuntarily and forcibly contracted muscle that does not relax. This causes a visible or palpable hardening of the involved muscle. A muscle cramp, technically, occurs when muscle tightens and shortens causing a sudden severe pain. Muscle cramps can last anywhere from a few seconds to a quarter of an hour or occasionally longer. They can recur frequently.
Costochondritis
Costochondritis is a condition that causes chest pain due to inflammation of the cartilage and bones in the chest wall. Also called Tietze's syndrome, costochondritis occurs when there is inflammation at the junction of the rib bone and breastbone (sternum). At this junction, there is cartilage joining these bones. This cartilage can become irritated and inflamed. Depending on the extent of the inflammation, costochondritis can be quite painful.
