Allergy or atopy is an abnormal response of the immune system to otherwise harmless substances in the environment such as pollen, mold, some foods etc. When your body comes across a substance that you are allergic to, it starts producing antibodies. These antibodies trigger the release of a number of chemicals from specialized cells called ?mast cells?. One of the key chemicals released is histamine, which causes symptoms such as itchiness and runny nose. Severe allergic reaction can cause low blood pressure, shock, loss of consciousness and even death. Management of allergies includes avoiding allergen exposure, use of anti-histamines, steroids and desensitization therapy
