I am a 27 year old male who is suffering from breathlessness for the past 6 months. These are sporadic and occur occasionally although the frequency of such has increased recently. I smoke. I do not feel any breathlessness when running/jogging. However sometimes during sitting or walking I feel it and this just grows on and it almost feels like I am going to die. My mother has chronic bronchitis.
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   I am Dr.
Doctor :   Let me read the query first to have a good discussion here
User :   Ok Great meeting you Sir !
Doctor :   Do you have associated problems like cough, wheezing, facial puffiness
User :   Yes I have cough.
Doctor :   Does it bring out sputum?
User :   Yes at time it does when I am suffering from cold. But not always.
User :   NO wheezing or facial puffiness of any sort
Doctor :   How frequent is the feeling of shortness of breath in a month?
Doctor :   What is your occupation?
User :   Sir In my opinion it is sometime induced by stress/anxiety and at times by cold. I am a student by occupation. The frequency is not very high. It may or may not happen in a month. But somehow when I have this feeling I feel very uncomfrtable
Doctor :   Anxiety is a very common cause of shortness of breath
User :   Another thing Sir. I had a chest X-ray taken 3 months ago and everything seemed normal at that point
Doctor :   What was your doctor's opinion?
Doctor :   when Xray was seen
User :   He said its completely fine. He attributed my shortness of breath to palpitation for which he prescribed me Derphylin (I am not sure about the spelling) He told me as your mother has chronic bronchitis you may have the same
Doctor :   Was a spirometry done?
User :   No
Doctor :   Yes palpitation is because of anxiety and thus SOB
Doctor :   Though I agree with him, I would just say to get a Spirometry also done to rule out chronic bronchitis and you have a smoking history too
Doctor :   Did you follow?
User :   Yes SIr
User :   Another thing that I want to describe to you is Sir thekind of erratic breathing I witness when this occurs. It is the problem in the expiration of air. There is short and sudden expiration of air. Its almost like pulling your tummy inside to let out the air and then take in the
User :   air
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   What is your BP, Pulse, Respiratory rate
Doctor :   any idea
User :   There is also tightness of chest accompanied with it if this patterns continues for sometime
User :   BP, Pulse was normal at that point of time when X-ray was taken
Doctor :   Is Deriphyllin helping you when you have an attack?
User :   Frankly speaking Sir I have not taken it even once
Doctor :   Ok, try it and let me know how do you feel about it after a week
User :   My best remedy for this is 1) lie down 2) take deep breaths 3) Stop thinking about it ,,, These 3 have helpmed me control the same
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   I knew these things should help you
Doctor :   Because these relaxes you
User :   Also I find that I briskly walk or jog for sometime it disappers
Doctor :   Anything that relax you
User :   Also I find that when I briskly walk or jog for sometime it disappears (Correction to last)
Doctor :   Exercise like jogging and walking is a mental relaxation
Doctor :   hence it should go off
User :   Sir Is there a serious problem with me ? and what medication should I take?
Doctor :   I do not think you have a serious problem
Doctor :   You need to work on mental relaxation
Doctor :   and start with Deriphyllin what your doctor prescribed whenever you have problem
User :   A few other inputs Sir ... there are have been very few occasions (2-3) when I have woken up in the middle of the night because of this.
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   That is fine
User :   Also I have a soar throat almost always (because I smoke and I feel that I do not take the smoke in completely but only till the throat)
Doctor :   Sore throat is because of smoking the salivary glands cells get dried up because of the carbon monoxide and when there is no moisture, your throat pains
Doctor :   Hence quit smoking and hydrate yourself very well with 10 to 12 glasses of water per day
User :   Is there any breathing exercises that you can recommend ? I have been trying pursed lip breathing. The problem is that I am scared of this. I find it difficult to even talk and stand still when I am experiencing this. If there is any medication which I can take to make this disappear it will be great
Doctor :   Yoga is the best way to get rid of this
Doctor :   Seek a yoga instructor who can make you learn about the asanas and meditation
Doctor :   There is no need of medication, I suggest you meet your doctor once again after use of Deriphyllin
Doctor :   He can change it if needed
User :   Ok Sir .. Thanks a lot for your time. I plan to meet a lung specialist tomorrow in person. I will get back to you with his inputs and other queries if at all
