User:Hello, I am experiencing the following symptoms: windy noise in my right ear, sometimes feels like my own heartbeat, when I move, bent down it worsens or becomes louder. I also have post nasal drip, and pressure in that ear, can be painful sometimes. Went to the ER they did a CT scan and it revealed an abnormal amount of air in my ear bone. The Dr didnt know what this meant though. I am very very anxious and stressed, I have had this for a week now. Please... help me. XXXXXXX
Doctor:Please let me read your post
Doctor:DO you have fever and pain in the ear ?
User:no fever
User:just pressure
User:the most disturbing symptom is the windy/heartbeat sound
Doctor:There are two possibilities for such an finding in the scan
Doctor:Middle ear infection or hole in the ear drum
User:so infections also come with no fever?
Doctor:Most of times only chronic infections can present with such finding in the scan
Doctor:Chronic infections usually don't present with fever or pain
Doctor:A course of antibiotics would be necessary to reduce the intensity of infection which may also help to reduce the air in the middle ear
Doctor:Are you there ?
Doctor:Is there anything I could help you with ?
User:just a few more questions
Doctor:Please proceed
User:is it possible that the dr was not able to realize that it was an infection?
User:are infections easy to miss?
Doctor:Yes, since chronic infection do not present with any obvious symptoms or even signs
User:what should I do then?
Doctor:it is possible to miss them
User:even with the results of the scan?
Doctor:Do consult your ENT specialist back and discuss about the same
Doctor:He shall plan to lave you on antibiotics and observe
User:I have an appointment until march 5 with the ENT, the ER dr referred me
User:but i am scared whatever this is will become worse
User:by then
Doctor:I believe that would be late
User:do you think this is something I should press on to get myself looked at before?
Doctor:I mean, the infection may not cause any serious complications by then
Doctor:but earlier the better in any case of infection
User:I told them it was very concerning for me, but they dont have anything before that
User:I am freaking out...
User:do you mean that it would be late because....?
Doctor:Yes, it not the same ENT you can try taking a second opinion from another ENT specialist
User:is it possible to find ENT's to chat with on this site?
Doctor:No, but you can post a question to the same online here
User:what if I leave this intreated and then the windy sound/heartbeat on my ear never goes away?
Doctor:It may progress but slowly
User:im very scared dr
Doctor:for sure, if left untreated the problems may persist for long.
User:I am just at loss, since they havent given me a diagnosis
Doctor:Do not worry, I am only concerned as your doctor did not consider the possibility of infection
Doctor:I agree, get examined by another ENT specialist for better management
User:I am considering going to a clinic right now and see what they say...
Doctor:I concur
User:have you seen any other cases like this one?
Doctor:Yes, for sure
Doctor:This is not XXXXXXX need not worry. But for sure needs a course of antibiotics
User:what kind of antibiotics?
Doctor:Antibactterial, specially against gram negative organisms
User:why do you think the infection did not show up on the scan?
Doctor:It doesnt as it is a chronic one
Doctor:the air in the middle ear and the pulsating feeling are indirect signs
User:oh...i see
User:do these types of infections also go away on their own?
Doctor:Yes, in most
Doctor:but safer it to be put on antibiotics
User:I am also experiencing a lot of anxiety
User:because of the fear
Doctor:as i say, need not worry
User:having this sound in my ear forever
Doctor:I repeat it is not XXXXXXX or serious
User:ok... thank you..
Doctor:Do take a second opinion
User:so many people experience this sound/heartbeat in their ear when they have an infection then..
User:also, when I move, like bending down, laying down, moving my head the sound worsens, why do you think that is?
Doctor:The fluid or pus in the middle ear will move when head is moved and causes changes in the intensity of the problem
User:but the scan did not reveal fluid tho...
Doctor:Usually clear secretions (fluid)get accumulated in chronic infections
User:just an abnormal amount of air in the ear bone
Doctor:May not be in significant amounts so as to be picked by the scan
User:oh i see
User:last questions
User:I have post nasal drip
User:and last night i took Avamys
User:and it made
User:the post nasal drip to improve a bit
User:and the sound was not as bad
User:why do think that is??
User:why is it that when the post nasal drip is sort of gone the sound diminishes?
Doctor:Amamys is a steroid, it reduces the inflamation very effectively
User:how can I get rid of the post nasal drip?
Doctor:Which could be the reason for the slight improvement
Doctor:You may have to be examined to find out the cause for the same
User:well thanks doc.
Doctor:You are welcome
Doctor:Wish you good health
Doctor:Take care
