User:I just started taking losarton for high blood pressure. I am a 52 year old female with a long standing history of high bold pressure partly controlled by ex resize and diet. I am taking 25 mil at night and 25 mil during the day. My blood pressure at night shoots up to 1190/104 on the losarton and I have very odd dream all night and feel as if my heart is racing. Why would this medicine cause this if it is supposed to lower my blood pressure? My pressure after I get up is 150/90.
I meant to say 190/104. I went to the emergency room as I had a blackout which us when they realized I had had a minor stroke in my brain stem which is why they put me on losarton
Doctor:Hi, I am Dr. XXXXXXX D
Let me read your query for few minutes to be able to have a good discussion here.
Doctor:Hi, I have gone through your query
Doctor:in my opinion, Losarton is not sufficient in your case
Doctor:You would need an additional blood pressure medicine in combination with losartan and you need to take that in the night time so that your blood pressure remains stable in the night as well
User:To clarify on losarton my blood pressure at night is 190/104 which wakes me up frequently along with odd and disturbing dreams. Shortly after waking my blood pressure is 150 /90 to 95
Doctor:I would consider 150/90 also to be high for a person who is on medication
User:I do not think I am tolerating the losarton well as it makes me feel very lethargic during the day and anxious and sleepless at night. Is there another option similar to losarton
Doctor:I did go through your query with great care, and I do understand that your blood pressure when you wake up frequently due to bad dreams is 190/104
Doctor:Yes, there are many alternatives to Losartan
Doctor:If you feel you are not tolerating Losartan well, you must immediately speak to your treating doctor to change the medicine
Doctor:Your blood pressure still needs to be brought down
Doctor:at least to around 130/80
Doctor:I would call that good control
User:And could a malfunctioning thyroid cause blood pressure to be so high. I have been very healthy in my diet, salt restriction, organic, healthy fish and vegetables and is still so excessive. so it is confusing that I struggle with pressure this high.
Doctor:Yes, a malfunctioning thyroid is one of the important causes for high blood pressures
User:One last question, do I need to be careful when eating fruit with losarton because of the potassium?
Doctor:There are two types of high blood pressure, first one is called "Essential/primary hypertension" where the cause is not precise or unknown
Doctor:The second one is called "secondary hypertension", meaning the high blood pressure is secondary to some other identifiable cause such as thyroid dysfunction or adrenal dysfunction
Doctor:Yes, you need to be slightly careful with fruits, but not too much
Doctor:Losartan doesn't interfere with potassium levels much
User:Okay thanks
Doctor:You are most welcome
Doctor:thank you
