What causes high triglyceride level? - Online Doctor Chats
Please proceed with your query
Hello doctor. I have recently known that I have high triglycerides, just over 240
I would like to understand how I can control this. Also can I take seacod oil tablets, do they help?
Ok, the Sea Cod, is just fine to take. I was wondering if you could give me the full results of the Lipid Profile.
Can you please name the parameter that you need. I have the report before me now
TG 238 to be precise
its not that high. I wouldn't be worried about that
Now as to the Triglycerides
This normally happens when you eat very dense fats.. like Ghee or Vanaspati
There is a genetic component certainly
You have to be careful about that, but overall. I'd like to encourage a more careful diet then talking about taking medications
I generally do not sweets. So other than ghee or vanaspati, are there items I should avoid
I am a vegetarian btw
Thats fine, that should keep your LDL low and your HDL high
Ok. How about exercising? Does it have an impact on TG also?
TG's are generated due to the fact that really dense fats are difficult to break down, so the body stores them as TGs
Certainly TG's will come down if you do Cardio exercises on a regular basis
Ok I can certainly start some of that also.
Is this level considered risky? And is it any matter of concern at this point?
Its not serious. Its a warning
I didn't think I would have any cholesterol related issue based on my diet until I saw this number
how young are you again?
OK, if I were you and I had these results. I would try and cut back on the ghee
Thats about it
Perfect that helps doctor. One last question, one of the doctors who reviewed the report after master checkup suggested tonact TG for life. What are your thoughts on that?
See, lots of doctors love to throw meds at these numbers
To be honest, I wasn't convinced about a life term medication..
but i like trying to modify lifestyle issues first before we do the meds
The med would do the trick no doubt.
But how bout you stay off the ghee for 6 months and then redo the Lipid Profile
if it's still high we can revisit the idea Tonact
Understand. That's what I would prefer. But the medication recommendation had me worried thinking this is very serious
Sure I can do that
Well, the basic idea we all have in these situations is to prevent the TG's from building up in the blood stream and causing circulatory issues
So would you recommend me against using the medication now based on the current report?
I would suggest that you stay away from the med, FOR NOW
really work at your diet, be careful, stay away from fats that stay solid at room temperature
Makes sense. I will try the exercises and no ghee diet for 6 months and then re do this
Be careful with foods made at restaurants.
They use cheap oils that will increase TGs
Good point. I do tend to eat out often
3-5 times a week maybe
Yup, your not alone here
try and fix these issues and you can stay off the meds
Sounds good doctor. I will follow your advice and re visit in 6 months.
Anything else I can help you with?
you've been very helpful. Thank you so much
Nope, this is all I had for now. Thanks so much again
Always Happy to help
