User:I am 69 yrs of age and have recently stopped bowel movements for 4 to 5 days when I used to go regularly every day. I am also starting to lose my appetite. My Dr has put me down for a colon examination, but I am thinking more a twisted bowel or something. I XXXXXXX t feel unwell or bloated but just concerned that my problem could be more serious. XXXXXXX
Doctor:I don't think you have any twisted bowel
Doctor:if that were the case, you would be in pain, which you say you don't have
Doctor:But total absence of bowel movements for 4 to 5 days needs further evaluation
Doctor:A simple X-ray of the abdomen will give enough information to move forward
Doctor:Meanwhile, if you don't have any bloating or pain, and if you are able to pass flatus, I would suggest you try a stools softener containing methylcellulose or laxative such as liquid paraffin
Doctor:are you there/
User:Yes...I do have sharp pains on left side of waist about kidney area but not in my abdomen
Doctor:That is significant
Doctor:Even if the location is not typical, pain associated with absent bowel movements could mean obstructed bowel
Doctor:I think it would be best if you go to the ER
User:If you put your hands on your hips its about wher your left thumb would be at the back
Doctor:I understand... it is not a typical position for the pain associated with bowel obstruction
Doctor:But it still is very significant
Doctor:bowel obstruction in the large intestine near the appendix can cause pain that is referred to the back
Doctor:Again, an X-ray of the abdomen will show if there is any obstruction
Doctor:You need to go to the ER
User:I am going back to the doctors on Monday 3rd would that be o k till then
Doctor:It is not good to wait
User:Should I get an xray privately
Doctor:If there is an intestinal obstruction, it is not at all good to wait any longer
Doctor:As I said, it is best to go to the ER
Doctor:if that is not feasible, then getting an X-ray is the least you can do
User:Thank you I will try to get xray
Doctor:is there anything else I can help you with?
Doctor:Thank you for consulting me here for your problem
Doctor:All the best
Doctor:Take care
Doctor:Are you there?
User:I have arranged for an abdomen x ray
Doctor:That is good
User:Thank you for your assistance
Doctor:Ask for "Erect X-ray Abdomen"
Doctor:You are most welcome
Doctor:Is there anything else?
User:No, and thanks again
Doctor:Okay, thanks for using the service
Doctor:all the best
Doctor:take care'
