User :   I am a female who had gastric band surgery 9 months ago and have lost 42lb to date. I noticed in recent times that practically overnight I could gain up to 8lb in one go and that my tummy swells. I was also getting pain between my shoulder blades. I had an ultrasound scan and have lots of gallstones in my gallbladder and my doctor has recommend gallbladder removal which I am going ahead with. I would like to ask you if in your opinion the weight gain and swelling of my stomach could be caused by the gallstones. My gastric band is ok and working fine and I have lost approx 1.5lb a week since it insertion so I don't think that is the problem. I am so frustrated to have the problem of tummy swelling and such fast weight gain. The weight can go again just as quickly and the tummy swelling can go down as well.
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   Do you have increase in appetite
User :   No. I actually can eat very little due to the band
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   But you face bloating after every meal
User :   No I don't. The bloating can come anytime not only after meals
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   Then the cause is most probably Gall baldder obstruction
User :   The obstruction being the gallstones - am I correct
Doctor :   Yes
User :   Besides the bloating would it also cause such a rapid weight gain?
Doctor :   The obstuction caused will obstruct the bile flow that will create a feeling of fullnewss with abdominla bloating
User :   When a gallbladder is removed do patients normally lose weight
Doctor :   Yes
User :   So realistically I should not be worried about such a fast weight gain/swelling of the tummy because you think it is caused by the gallstones - is this correct
Doctor :   Yes iy because of gallbaldder obstruction
User :   Would the removal of the gallbladder be any problem to my band as I know they are in close proximity to each other.
Doctor :   No
Doctor :   They genrally do it laproscopicaslly
Doctor :   And no complications as such its a routine and a simple proceudre
Doctor :   * procedure
Doctor :   Though they are very close it easily visible and they also do it with caution as history will be elicited
User :   Great. That has put my mind at ease. Thank you for your help. Just one last question - is there anything that could ease the bloating before I have the operation?
Doctor :   Yes more of carbohydrates in diet
Doctor :   Carbonated drinks
Doctor :   Avoid Patotoes/ burgers/ milk products/ carbonated drinks
Doctor :   will ease your symptoms
User :   I can't drink carbonated drinks with the gastric band and carbs are restricted due to the fact that I have a small stoma which fills easily but I shall make adjustments to my diet and cut out potatoes/milk
Doctor :   That should help you
User :   Thank you very much and I will end chat now.
Doctor :   You can also try sdding more fibre to diet
Doctor :   Thanks for consulting me
Doctor :   Bye for now
Doctor :   wishing you speedy recovery
Doctor :   Plz post your feedback
