User :   We have had a cat for about a year. I have always been asthmatically allergic to cats but for my husband's sake I tried. I thought I was succeeding until a little over a month ago when I started having breathing problems. My doctor says it a flair up of asthma and I believe its due to the allergen from the cat. I am currently on Advair, Singulair and taking Ventolin when needed and Zyrtec every day. We are finding a home for him, going to replace the livingroom carpet with hardwood floors, put a HEPA filter on the furnace and cheesecloth over the vents and my question is, when we try to wipe down the walls, do we use plain water?? Can we use a steamer on upholstery and will that neautralize the protein in the saliva?? Is there anything else we can do in the home to help remove the allergen??
Doctor :   Hi
User :   Hi
Doctor :   Let me read the query.
User :   ok
Doctor :   Let me brief you.
User :   ok
Doctor :   Its difficult to predict the exact source of allergen that is inducing the symptoms in you without an allergen test.
Doctor :   The most common allergens are dust and pollens.
User :   And I cant have the skin test as I have severe derma graphia and I test positive for the control prick as well
User :   Right, but I am pretty positive its the cat and I would like to know if we can use plain water to wash down the walls and if steam will neautralize the protein??
Doctor :   Few others are allergic to food, drugs, and pets.
User :   I am allergic to foods, numerous drugs and definitely cats!!
Doctor :   Since you are unable to get a allergen test, the allergens that are causing your symptoms can only determined by past exposure history.
Doctor :   Hence try restricting those.
Doctor :   Coming to your questions.
User :   Right, I understand that!! Thanks, really need to know those 2 questions especially
Doctor :   You can use plain water while wiping down the walls to prevent the dust from entering the room.
Doctor :   High amount of heat can neutralise proteins but if you are allergic to specific protein there are high chances that the products of its degradation can also be allergic to it.
User :   So would you suggest just using plain tap water and not the steam then?? What about upholstery for the sofa??
Doctor :   Have you followed what I have suggested?
User :   Well I am wondering what you suggest for the upholstery type pieces in the room??
Doctor :   Yes, you can just use simple plain tap water,
User :   Ok, thanks, thats all I needed to know
Doctor :   use leather sofa instead of fabric ones.
Doctor :   And keep the curtains closed on the windows and the doors.
Doctor :   Have you followed what I have suggested?
User :   Yes, thanks. Ending the chat now, thanks for your time
