User :   My 9 year old son was sick at 5 in the afternoon (three days ago) with stomach pain nausea then vomiting. He then went to sleep later vomited twice in his SLEEP, once my husband heard him the second I did. He was a bit feverish and achy but vomited again 2 more times (but woke up). He was a bit yucky the next day and didnt eat anything much but didnt spew, yesterday he felt better and ate HEAPS pooed 4 times, he then got a stomach ache before bed and felt ill and was belching etc, but seemed to calm down. He went to bed and vomited (IN HIS SLEEP) again, which our daughter heard. He doesnt know he has done it but wakes well and goes and has a shower, went back to sleep and didnt vomit again. He is a bit tired and lethargic today and eaten a decent amount but not much and is feeling so so. We are mainly concerned about the not waking up when vomiting. What do you think.
Doctor :   hi
Doctor :   Dr. XXXXXXXX here. let me read what you have typed.
User :   thanks
Doctor :   his not waking up while vomiting is strange
Doctor :   usually kids do wake up
Doctor :   it also puts him on risk of aspiration of vomitus content and landing up with pneumonia
User :   hmm yes i know, we are concerned.
User :   do you have any idea why he wouldnt be waking up .
Doctor :   get a complete examination done by his pediatrician along with a chest x-ray to see if he is having any other problem
Doctor :   the gastro opinion might also be needed to rule out any esophageal problem
User :   also do you think it started out as a tummy bug ? His cousin had the vomiting the day before and he was with him
Doctor :   by doing an endoscopy to see if a hiatal hernia is causing him such symptoms.
Doctor :   it could be a infection too since his cousin has it too
Doctor :   but if he is vomiting ,ainly in his sleep and not during day time, then
Doctor :   *mainly
Doctor :   then problems with esophagus should be ruled out.
Doctor :   is he on any medications?
User :   none at all. He is a wild boy who goes goes goes all day and he was fine all day , being his first day back at school after holidays. I was concerned also that he may have been dehydrated, because he had been out all weekend for three days at a car thing with his grandparents and he was totally exhausted and hot etc afterwards and had a headache on the Monday night but went to school well and was in great spirits until he was sick at about 5 pm and about 1/2 hour before hand he was feeling unwell
User :   this doesnt explain however WHY he isnt waking up during the vomiting.
User :   3 out of the six times
Doctor :   you can try giving him TUMS (pediatric) and see if he better with the vomiting sensation.
Doctor :   continue to give him small sips of fluids, like ORS solution
Doctor :   or home made ORS with 1 teaspoon sugar and a small pinch of salt in 1 glass of boiled and cooled water
User :   hmm i might do that, I think he is getting heaps of gas and rumbling tummy which is coming back up on him in his sleep like a reflux causing him to vomit.
Doctor :   yes, the increased acid production will cause the gas to be more, causing teh reflux
Doctor :   start him on the antacids (OTC)
Doctor :   and meet his doctor for his chest x-ray and endoscopy
Doctor :   to rule out any serious issues
Doctor :   keep his diet simple, let him be on bland diet without spice, oil
Doctor :   avoid all caffeinated beverages
Doctor :   have you followed what I have said?
User :   ok i will do that, see how he goes. The night he wasnt sick in between , he was on a very basic diet of just fluids and occasional dry toast etc and he didnt vomit that night.
Doctor :   if he is not better with these measures, consult specialist
Doctor :   you can take help from our panel specialists.
Doctor :   who deal with pediatric gastroenterology also.
Doctor :   WWW.WWWW.WW Doctor :   visit this link for the same
User :   I will do. Thanks. We are going to see our doctor this afternoon to see what he thinks.
Doctor :   is there anything else I can help you with?
User :   no thats fine thankyou. :)
Doctor :   thanks for consulting me. bye for now.
