User :   My vocal cord hurts, left side, when I'm in an environment where I have to raise my voice a bit, like a crowded restaurant. It's been going on for about three weeks. It does not hurt when I swallow. Some history: had a cold about six weeks ago, and prodrome with subsequent cold sore about two weeks ago, same side.
Doctor :   Hi,
Doctor :
User :   hello
Doctor :   vocal cords do not affect swallowing
User :   if that's a question, no
Doctor :   rather cannot be affected by sore throat or cold
User :   your thoughts, then
Doctor :   the common cause of such a presentation is a vocal nodule
User :   went to local clinic. they didn't see/say anything, tested for strep negative, of course
Doctor :   which occurs due to mild tear in the cords due to high phonation ( loud talking)
User :   could the herpes that presented affected the vocal fold?
Doctor :   no , its very rare , if it happens it is very severe and almost aphonia results ( inability to talk due to severe edema of the chords )
User :   I was clearing my throat a lot, getting up phlegm, when I had a cold. could that have caused the problem, and how long should I wait before I go to an ENT?
User :   on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being most painful, it's only about a 4, but it is annoying, and going on so long
Doctor :   no, that is not a chance here
Doctor :   the vocal chords are deep seated to be reached while cleaning
User :   what should I do?
Doctor :   Rest is the best treatment
Doctor :   you can add to it by gargling warm water with salt in it
User :   OK, how about inhaling steam
Doctor :   yes, works , if the water is added with few drops of eucalyptus it ill help more
User :   thank you. where are you, by the way, India?
Doctor :   Yes,
User :   Thanks again Bye
Doctor :   thanks for consulting me , kindly provide your feedback
Doctor :   Bye for now
Doctor :   Take care
