User :   Hello
I am very worried. I have 14 month old son. When i was pregnant with him I had 5 ultrasound scans - two very early, he was born by vontouse and needed a bit of oxygen when he was born. A few weeks ago he needed a chest x ray. I am so worried that he has had too mcuh medical intervention as I keep reading that many of these things are not neccessarily safe for a baby, i even read that oxygen at birth may be linked to childhood luekaemia? Now he has a had a chest x ray I am worried about the radiation exposure and someone else told me that ultrasound may also be bad for baby's cells.
I know I sound very over the top but I cant help worrying that all this may have affected him. He is currently a very healthy weight and developmentally ahead for his age, I am still breastfeeding him - although there seems to be conflicting reports on the value of this, but people seem to say that effects may come out later? Do you think he may have long term damage from all this intervention? Sorry i sound so ridiculous i am a born worrier!
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :
Let me read it
Doctor :
This is very much normal that mother worry about the safety of their children
Doctor :
In fact they should be careful about their upbringing
Doctor :
I am happy you are the same
Doctor :
In present context let me say few facts
Doctor :   Your son is 14 months old

Doctor :   Getting an Xray shall not harm him now
Doctor :
or in the future
Doctor :
Each Xray will expose a person to some amount of radiation
Doctor :
that is true
Doctor :
But the quantity of radation exposure during X ray is far less for it to damage the cells in the body
Doctor :
Ultrasounds are less powerful and less dangerous than X rays though
Doctor :
Their damage to cells is thereotical
Doctor :
and has no evidence yet
User :   This worries me when you say 'yet'!
Doctor :
Do not worry about this at all
Doctor :
Next, I would say breast feeding after 12 months gives no extra benefit to the child
Doctor :
though few mothers practice till 2 yrs
Doctor :
YOu should add all the foods to the child
Doctor :   Fruits, Veggies, Meat, Egg, Cereals

Doctor :
This comes as a balanced diet for him and he grows well
Doctor :
with proper development
Doctor :
Oxygen usage early in the treatment shall cause leukemia is baseless
Doctor :
As your history says that his weight is healthy and the developmental milestones are acheived perfectly well
Doctor :
I appreciate that one
User :   May I ask - are you a paediatrician?
Doctor :   I am a General Practitioner

Doctor :
but I have been trained in treating new born
User :   Ok thank you. I am still very worried about the ultraspund exposure - I do not understand why they are allowed to do it if there is a question that it may damage cells?
Doctor :
I can only practically say that they do not significantly damage cells that produce enough side effects on the human body
Doctor :   Any Doctor shall recommend few tests according to the current problem to be able to find better diagnosis of the condition.
Doctor :
Here he keeps in mind that the test he recommends does not damage the human
Doctor :
If that happens that tests would have been obsolete by now
User :   Also, his cord was cut very early as it was round his neck - I wanted to leave it on as I heard that it contans a lot of goodness for the baby but they cut it early - I heard that the baby should recieve all the stem cells and other cells that they need for life?
User :   He did not recieve these obviously as they cut it very early
Doctor :
The Cord is cut early to separate the baby from the mother
Doctor :
and there is no said recommended time published in the researches that this much time will help the baby in this way
Doctor :
The stem cells and the other cells will not help the baby at that moment.
Doctor :
They might help the same baby in future when grown into adult for other diseases
Doctor :
that is the reason why there are stem cell banks installed now a days
Doctor :
These banks store the stem cells taken from the cord
Doctor :
and use them as potent cells to create more organs in future
User :   So if we did not stor his cord blood then is he at a disadvantage as he will not ever recieve these cells - really they should be inside him?
Doctor :
These cells are produced inside the baby in the Bone morrow
Doctor :
thus they take the Bone marrow cells and then extract them
Doctor :
If you wish to take a Pediatrician's opinion on these, you can take them here
Doctor :
WWW.WWWW.WW User :   Thank you. So the body preoduces these cells anyway do you mean?
Doctor :
He is a Neonatologist and a Pediatrician who can answer the queries in detail and answer
Doctor :
within 24 hours
User :   Ok
Doctor :
Yes the body produces these cells
Doctor :
I hope I am clear and understandable
User :   I am a little confused as to why people store the blood then - is this because perhaps the bone marrow may be damaged?
Doctor :   Sometimes extraction of these cells is far difficult
Doctor :
from Bone marrow
User :   I am also not sure whether i should give my baby the MMR vaccine
Doctor :
You should
Doctor :
why do you withhold
Doctor :
may I know the reason why the Xray is taken
User :   I have heard that it may cause autism and it may contain harmful ingredients that are not known if they are safe
User :   It was due to suspected pneumonia, but it was just a chest infection
Doctor :
The benefits of the vaccination far outweigh the effects that it may cause
Doctor :
hence it is recommneded to take the MMR
User :   I have heard that giving an x ray is like taking a long haul flight? But if you are in the air, then you are not exposed to other forms of radiation, is this true - then the risks are lower? I am confused also as you are tol not to have an xray in pregnancy but you are told that flying is safe?
Doctor :
You are asked not to take long flights in the 1st and 3rd semester
Doctor :   not all the time
Doctor :
There is no relation between being the air and Xray
User :   I thought that you are exposed to cosmic radiation in the air - have read this many times
Doctor :
commercial air travel during pregnancy poses no special risks to a healthy pregnant woman or her baby.
Doctor :   Certain conditions in pregnancy â?? such as severe anemia, sickle cell disease, clotting disorders and placental insufficiency â?? can increase the risk of problems.
Doctor :   Frequent flights can increase the radiation exposure than the recommendations
User :   Its just that as I was worried about the x ray, I was told that radiation is all around us and that if I had gone on a long haul flight with my baby he would have been exposed to the same amount of radiation as in the chest x ray, so I was confused as to why they do not allw x rays in pregnancy if this is the case
User :   I was told many times that a long haul flight is he equivalent of an x ray, but they do not let women have x rays in pregnancy
Doctor :   These are by lay people who have half knowledge
Doctor :
Do not put these in mind
