User :   aFTER A COMPLETE SHOULDER REPLACEMENT OF THE LEFT ARM, I HAVE NERVE DAMAGE. A EVG STUDY REVEALED AN ABNORMAL MUSCULATANEOUS NERVE. THERE IS NUMBNESS AND BURNING IN MY FOREARM AND A LACK OF STRENGTH IN THAT ARM. THE SURGEON SAID THE NERVE MUST HAVE BEEN STRETCHED DURING SURGERY. 10 WEEKS OF PHYSICAL THERAPY HAS IMPROVED MY REACH BUT NOT STRENGTH. WHAT FUTHER TESTS CAN BE ORDERED TO FIND OUT IF THIS IS A PERMANENT OR TEMPORARY INJURY.
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   Let me read the query
User :   hi
Doctor :   NCV- Nerve conduction studies are the way to about now
Doctor :   Let me tell you one more thing here
Doctor :   Once a ENG is done and determined that the nerve is stretched and not broken in entirety
Doctor :   then the recover takes a large time from 3 months to 6 months
User :   I HAD THE NERVE STUDY WITH THE ABNORMAL MUS. NERVE AS RESULT. WHAT OTHER STUDY?
Doctor :   depending on the number of other factors
User :   WHAT FACTORS?
Doctor :   Nutrition, age, co moribid conditions, local factors in the area
User :   THE BKISEP IS NOT RESONDING TO STIMULATION
Doctor :   is the electrical stimulation done
User :   USING A TENS-LIKE UNIT
Doctor :   Ok
User :   WOULD A MRI SHOW IF BROKEN OR STRETCHED?
User :   OR AN ULTRASOUND
Doctor :   I feel that no further tests are advised
Doctor :   Actually a clinical finding can help the Neurologist locate approximate damage of the nerve
User :   WHY? HOW THEN DO WE FIND OUT?
Doctor :   To confirm it he can ask for MRI
Doctor :   Based on MRI findings there are two choices
User :   WHAT DO U MEAN 'CLINICAL FINDING'?
Doctor :   1) Conservative treatment, includes physical therapy, TENS, Mecobalamin Supplements
Doctor :   Clinical finding is on examination with jerks, sensations and muscle powers
Doctor :   2) Surgical decompression of the nerve
Doctor :   Ultrasound is of no help
User :   I AM TAKING GABAPENTIN. HOW DOES THAT HELP?
Doctor :   Your doctor should have educated you on the recovery time
User :   HE SAID COULD BE A YEAR
Doctor :   Gabapentin can reduce the sensory symptoms
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   I think he is adopting the conservative approach
Doctor :   and does not want to open and explore the area surgically
User :   BUT IT DOES NOT HELP THE REPAIR
Doctor :   The nerve healing takes lot of time as I said and it should heal on its own
Doctor :   Any other supplements will not greatly reduce the healing time
Doctor :   Ofcourse gabapentin is one of such supplements
Doctor :   Did you follow?
Doctor :   My advice is to continue with physical therapy while waiting for recovery
User :   YES.. DOES ELECTRICAL STIMULATION HELP THE REPAIR
Doctor :   Marginally
User :   SO IT IS A WAITING GAME.
Doctor :   yes
Doctor :   Time is the chief participant
User :   IS THIS COMMON OF THESE TYPES OF SURGERIES? I HAD MY RIGHT SHOULDER REPLACED ONY TEO MONTHS PRIOR WITH NO COMPLICATIONS
Doctor :   Is it two months or ten months?
User :   2
Doctor :   Ok, it is not too common in the hands of experienced Orthopedic surgeons
Doctor :   I am a General Physician, I do not participate in Orthopedic surgeries
Doctor :   though
User :   I UNDERSTAND
User :   WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF THIS WAS YOU
User :   PHYSICAL THERPY HAS BEEN FOR 12 WEEKS SO FAR
Doctor :   I would wait for it to heal and continue with the physical and rehabilitation
Doctor :   What is your age?
User :   58
Doctor :   At this age, the healing is slower than younger adults
Doctor :   or children
User :   YES
User :   OK CAN I GET A COPY OF THIS CHAT?
Doctor :   Yes, you can click on the Accounts and Setting on the right top corner of the page and there is an option of Chat history which you can click and mail to yourself
User :   THANKS
Doctor :   Do you have any more queries
User :   NO
Doctor :   Pleasure speaking to you
Doctor :   Bye
