User :   I went to a new doctor for the first time in 4 years. I was having a panic attack - afraid to stay and shaky, wanted to go home. I was prescribed Xanax (Alprazolam) .25 mg 1 tablet per day and see him in two weeks. He hasn't seen me before and he's not a psychiatrist. Is what he did the correct thing or is he prescribing something without knowing the patient first? Is xanax that safe?
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   let me read ur query
Doctor :   May i know all other symptoms that u had ?
Doctor :   other than anxiety ?
Doctor :   any shortness of breath, chest pain, tremulousness ?
Doctor :   any headache ?
Doctor :   Are u there ?
Doctor :   Are u there ?
User :   I'm here. Sorry.
User :   I get very scared, shaky, sometimes trouble breathing (more...)
User :   Weak in back of legs, just feeling like I want to go home and rest and afraid I won't be able to make it back home. I told the doctor all this when I was there to see him.
Doctor :   Do ur symptoms recurr in episodes ?
User :   I also have Fibromyalgia, which he also knows from both the papers I gave him, diagnosis from chiropractor of Fibrositis and a telephone interview with him.
User :   Yes, they are most common if I go out somewhere I'm not used to going or trying to stay at an appointment. Or if someone (neighbor) is having a big fight where police are called (rare, thankfully).
Doctor :   and do u have similar symptoms , alll time of the day?
Doctor :   oh ok
User :   And also if I take a pill (like tylenol or lactaid, etc.) and wonder what it'll do to me.
User :   No. When I'm at home (which is most of the time) I'm usually fine.
User :   I don't sleep well and also just before my period the symptoms worsen (ie. I can't go out even to stores I used to be able to sometimes).
Doctor :   i guess, then what you have is anziety disorder or social phobia , and the basic medication for this condition is Xanax
User :   I just wonder if this doctor is doing the right thing in the prescription or if he is being too quick about things without knowing my medical problems more (even though I did submit data and talked to him on phone prior).
Doctor :   the dose given by ur doc is very mild and effective as well
User :   Ok, well, socially I'm very social and can talk to people even while waiting in line at a store. But yes, I get VERY nervious being out and am afraid of being "trapped" where I can't go home right away. So yeah, sounds about right.
Doctor :   I understand your apprehension about medications and that you dint have much communication from ur doc
User :   Ok Because I was afriad of hearing how Xanax is addictive, can kill you, etc.
Doctor :   But, the dose is effective
User :   I took one yesterday and had a massive panic attack until it kicked in. My head felt "wierd" then too. Then it kicked in and slowed me WAY down, felt drugged a bit but not so bad I couldn't drive, go vote, get gas or shop so it didn't effect my activities much.
Doctor :   and it does not cause much addiction in that dosage
User :   It can not cause fatalities either?
Doctor :   it does not
User :   And the side effect will they pass after awhile?
User :   (Those are all my questions)
Doctor :   but it has a effect to calm down people
Doctor :   and can be sedative
Doctor :   hence u need to take it at bedtime and not in the daytime
Doctor :   yes the effects will pass off
User :   I used chamomile tea and inhaled lavender oil yesterday too so might have added to it?
Doctor :   it does not cause any fatalities in the dosage given to you
User :   Ok, so like 10pm is better than 10am?
Doctor :   yes that's fine
Doctor :   yes 10 pm is better
Doctor :   do not take it at 10 AM
User :   That way I won't get the "drugged" feeling when I wake up and I'll sleep better. Sounds good. Can I get a transcript of this chat? Thank you for your help!
Doctor :   YES
