User :   Hi doctor, My daughter is 8 months old and is currently undergoing treatment at home (doc prescribed Fluvir) for H1N1 since the last 2 days. The test results are awaited this evening. Her fever is goes down sometimes to 99 and then creeps up to 102 and sometimes it is even 102.5. We keep cold sponging and bring the temp under control. Doc also asked us to give Babygesic syrup every 6 hrs irrespective of the fever being there or not.. But, looks like the babygesic syrup does not work very effective. He has also given Meftal syrup to be given in the night if fever is above 102.Pls suggest if you think the fever is due to H1N1. Some of the kids in the apartment also got hold of the flu but they underwent normal antibiotic treatments for the viral fever but were not asked to be tested for H1N1. Is our doctor in the right track? Fluvir causes vomiting sensation at times with vomiting once a day and loose motions.
Doctor :   Hi
User :   Hi
Doctor :   Dr XXXXX here
User :   Nice to chat with you
Doctor :   Let me read your query
User :   sure
User :   To give you additional inputs
Doctor :   Does she have any other problem other than fever?
User :   My daughter was given a flushot last month 1st dose and the doc mentioned that there would be no fever
User :   but fever did come and went away in 2 days
User :   No. she does not have any peculiar problems other than her fever sometimes high and is always tired...
User :   she's on breast milk currently
User :   did take curd rice today....
Doctor :   Do you mean to say that she had fever last month also?
User :   For 2 days the day the doctor gave the flu vaccine
User :   he said that's the first dose and there's another one due sometime in Aug
User :   but the fever was not alarming last time (1 month back ) was only 100.5
Doctor :   Were any tests conducted?
User :   Yes.
User :   The doc asked us to get the H1N1 throat and nasal swabs
User :   Test results are awaited
Doctor :   Ok
User :   but the doc said we should anyways start with the medication
User :   And she started with the medication from Sat night
User :   The fever first came around Friday night and was not stopping
User :   that's when we took her to the doc on saturday morning
Doctor :   Ok
User :   and looking at her face he said the baby looks too tired and it could be H1N1 since there are many kids getting it
User :   hence he asked us to get it tested
User :   My concern is since the other kids in the building have been given antibiotics rather than being asked for H1N1 tests, why is my kid being asked
Doctor :   Without the investigations nothing can be commented but common symptoms in children are fatigue, excesive sleepimess, tired baby
User :   She's cranky at times...probably because of the abnormal behaviour of the Fluvir syrup
User :   fluvir is causing loose motions and runny nose when she sneezes
User :   Wont the flu shot that was given last month supposed to protect her
User :   do you feel that it could be H1N1? or you feel that it could well be a viral fever
Doctor :   In children of less than a year it takes time for the shot to be effective.
Doctor :   It can take time
User :   With all due respect to doctors, my doc says that there's a bed available and if the fever continues, we can admit her...but HONESTLY
User :   I'm not in favor of admitting her anywhere...I would like to treat her from home...
Doctor :   Keep common surfaces and items, including toys, clean and disinfected with regular household disinfectant
User :   we're doing that
Doctor :   Keep your child at home and away from day care or other group activities
User :   she
User :   she's always at home
User :   my concern is since none of the kids in the building have H1N1, isthere a chance that she can still have it?
User :   she does not go anywhere else
User :   if it is H1N1, how long will it take for the fever to subside and typically how many days it can take for the kid to recover?
Doctor :   I will advise you to take a second opinion from a paeditrician and also if required may be she can be admitted.
Doctor :   So that better care can be taken of and also proper treatment can be given
Doctor :   Wait for the reports to come
User :   and if it is NOT H1N1 then how many days can it take to cure
User :   will do...
User :   Thank you Dr..
User :   Will you be available in the next time I login?
User :   I'm expecting the test results sometime around 4.30 in the evening
User :   otherwise the child does smile at times and tries to play even....but gets tired quickly
Doctor :   If it is not H1N1 and simple viral infection it is cured in 7 to 10 days and a child can take 15 days to fully recover
Doctor :   I am available between 8 to 5.
User :   I hope it would not be too serious ...from what I've mentioned currently, do you suspect anything
User :   Ok.
User :   I knw you don't have the child to give your feedback better, but with all the points that I've mentioned, what's ur feeling , is it H1N1 or normal viral fever? I'll not hold you for anything that you feel now..for sure
User :   just an opinion
Doctor :   See nothing can be said without observing and examining the child because the symptoms alone cannot suggest anything
Doctor :   So just wait for the results and try that her fever does not go too high
User :   Thank you for your time..
User :   Good day..
Doctor :   Since this is also a kind of viral infection and symptoms are quite similar to normal flu.
Doctor :   Is there anything else i can help you with?
User :   nothing more...
User :   thank you
Doctor :   Thanks for consulting me, bye for now.
User :   bye
