User:Hi Doctor, our son is 1.3 years old. He is passing urine 20-25 times a day. We feel that is the reason for not gaining weight. Could you please suggest if this is normal?
User: XXXXXXX XXXX: Hi Doctor, our son is 1.3 years old. He is passing urine 20-25 times a day. We feel that is the reason for not gaining weight. Could you please suggest if this is normal?
Doctor:It seems polyuria.
Doctor:But it depends on his fluid intake
User:Hardly he takes fluid as intake
Doctor:Sometimes babies drink too much milk and then they pass lots of urine
User:Only during nights he drinks milk twice... But we observed during day time also he passes excessive urine even after taking rice...
Doctor:Now that he more than 1 year old, we can conduct a few tests on him like blood tests and urine tests
Doctor:Causes of polyuria can be urinary tract or kidney issue
Doctor:Or it can be high blood sugar
Doctor:Is he on any medicineÉ
User:Sure... Daily we give iron and calcium drops
Doctor:Does he have constipation
Doctor:iron and calcium are ok
User:No doc
Doctor:so the next step will be to get tests done
Doctor:urine routine and microscopy wil be needed
User:Could you please suggest what tests we need to get it done?
User:We'll get them done..
Doctor:For blood tests, fasting blood sugar, electrolytes, blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine and hemogram will be needed
Doctor:also get hemoglobin and serum calcium levels done
User:Since he is very young... how can we get fasting blood samples... during midnights also he drinks milk...
Doctor:is he breast feeding during night
User:No doctor... Heritage packet milk...
Doctor:so feed him water or gatorade during night
Doctor:And take him to lab early morning
Doctor:One more thing is that you need to watch him for dehydration
User:No dehydration observed...
Doctor:In case you notice dehydration, give him gatorade after each urination
Doctor:How much urine does he pass, we need to check that also
Doctor:mostly the doctor will give you a bag to collect 24 hour urine sample
Doctor:Do you have any question here
User:Not sure, how we can collect 24 hours urine from such young baby...
Doctor:yes that can be an issue
Doctor:lets see
Doctor:first we should get the basic tests done
Doctor:there are ways to collect urine
User:Do you see this something to be worried doctor... please suggest which doctor we need to show...
Doctor:For now you can see a pediatrician
Doctor:if need be, he may refer you to a superspecialist
User:ok... we'll go now to meet pediatrician...
Doctor:it is better to rule out our doubts with tests
Doctor:20 - 25 seems a little on the higher side
User:Sure doctor... can it be because of cold weather?
Doctor:How cold is it at your place
User:It is pretty cold doc... 25 cel
Doctor:It is not that cold
User:Sure doctor... Ok.. then we'll go to meet doctor now...
User:thank you...
Doctor:Thanks for consulting
Doctor:Take care
