User :   My daughter is 20 just diagnosed with thyroiditis. Her heart rate goes up to 125 with walking to the other room. Her resting pulse is in the 80s. Should she be on meds.
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :
How can I help you?
User :   what do you think of her heart rate
Doctor :   Yes, it is on the higher side

Doctor :
and termed as tachycardia
Doctor :
What type of thyroiditis it is?
Doctor :
Like an infective, autoimmune, etc
User :   not sure just found out friday. her history was not feelin well since beginning of january and after many er visits and head and heart scans were normal. the endo said is was a virus that should level out.
Doctor :   Ok

User :   TSH levels were on jan 7 0.84 1/23 the TSH was 1.14 on 1/28 her TSH was 3.70 on 2/5 her TSH was 6.o and on 2/18 her TSH was 1.88
Doctor :
Ok
Doctor :   What are the symptoms?
User :   lightheaded, doesnt tolerate heat at all no energy at all just took her back to college today so she can try to function but i wonder if she needs a beta blocker. She just texted me that her resting heart rate is around 78 and when she walks around it goes as high as 128
Doctor :   Ok

Doctor :
On walking it is a bit higher
Doctor :
but resting is fine
Doctor :
Resting is more reliable
Doctor :
When walking fast, it is common to have such increased heart rates
Doctor :
Many a times it is recommended that they reach higher levels
Doctor :
so wrt heart rate, there is not much of concern
User :   i guess my question would be what is too high for her
User :   like walking to class etc
Doctor :   Ok

Doctor :
With strenuous exercise, if it is going up to 160 as well, it is fine for her age
Doctor :   and her TSH levels are also within range, except for 1 instance
User :   okay so resting should be 70-80 and up to 160 walking
Doctor :   Right

Doctor :   In thyroiditis, TSH levels would be very much supressed to negligible levels

Doctor :
but that is not the case in her
User :   The endo said she had some kind of virus that attacked her thyroid and that is why the levles went crazy and now they are leveling out. not sure how long she will have to put up with the high heart rate as she plays tennis and can hardly breath just walking
Doctor :   For now, till she is back to comfortable levels, she should refrain from over exertion

User :   the endo said her levels were prob negligible before we had any readings?
Doctor :   Ok

Doctor :
That is a possibility
User :   okay so you think she should just lay low and not push it until she feels better
Doctor :   and the symptoms does indicate high thyroid levels

Doctor :
Yes, she should take rest now
User :   is that hyper thyroid
Doctor :   Yes

Doctor :
and that is the reason the TSH levels come down
Doctor :   but cannot classify her like that for now

Doctor :
as the viral infection is suspected
User :   ohhhh how long does it take the thyroid to recover and the body go back to normal
Doctor :
once the infection is cleared, she should be back to normal
User :   should she be on anti biotics
Doctor :
the main focus of treatment is symptomatic
Doctor :
along with steroids
Doctor :
and analgesics
User :   she was not given any treatment just said call in 2 weeks
Doctor :
Ok
Doctor :
Active intervention is not required
Doctor :
it is only supportive care to reduce pain and inflammation
Doctor :
Beta blockers would help in her case
Doctor :
so should be considered
User :   ok i was more worried about the high heart rate she has no pain at all
Doctor :
to reduce the heart rates and for psychological relief as well
User :   ha ha agreed maybe i should take some too!
Doctor :   Not just a placebo like
Doctor :
there shall be more anxiousness during elevated thyroid levels
Doctor :
So I mentioned about it
User :   are there any side effects her blood pressure being low and beta blockers she is normally about 103/55
Doctor :   The dosage shall be adjusted to suit her needs

Doctor :
and ofcourse it does require monitoring for a while
User :   oh okay great . i think i will call the doctor in the am. thanks so much
