User :   My wife is pregnant. This is second baby. In her first pregnancy she was diagnosed with minor thalassemia. Her hemoglobin level is 12. Is it okay. Is there any other test we should get? Should she take some tablets?
User :   Hi
Doctor :   Hi
User :   Hope you got my query
Doctor :
Ok
User :   Are you a GP. Whats your area of interest
User :   ???
User :   are you there
Doctor :   May I know her age?
User :   27
User :   ie current age
Doctor :
Ok
Doctor :   How many months pregnant is your wife?
User :   13 weeks
Doctor :
Ok.
Doctor :
I shall explain it to you.
Doctor :
Generally thalessemia minor does not cause any symptoms.
User :   ok
Doctor :
But during the pregnancy there hemoglobin levels may fall due to the development of iron deficiency.
Doctor :
hemoglobin of 12 is ok.
Doctor :
But as the pregnancy continues this may worsen.
Doctor :
Hence iron supplements may be needed to avoid this.
Doctor :   No new tests are needed at this point of time.
Doctor :
The routine scan that are to be done have to be done.
Doctor :   I suggest that you keep her hemoglobin levels checked frequently.
Doctor :   Have you followed?
User :   any particular any iron supplements you will suggest
User :   yes
User :   any tablest
User :   tablets
Doctor :   The supplements given by your gynecologist are sufficient.
Doctor :
You may continue the same.
User :   they havent given anything? Thats why I am asking you
Doctor :
Ok.
User :   Do you have any suggestions
Doctor :
I am not sure if iron supplements are OTC, just give me a minute. I would like to confirm this as you may need a prescription if it isn't.
User :   what about Ferrotab
User :   and follic acis
User :   acid
Doctor :
At this point, i would also like to suggest that severe anemia occuring in thalessemia minor is also a rare incident.
User :   ok
Doctor :   I am not sure about ferotab, but you may get feosol tablets as an OTC.

Doctor :
You may have to use 60mg tablets a day.
Doctor :   This is the usual dosage given during pregnancy.
Doctor :   I would suggest you to follow with her gynecologist too. As regular follow ups may be needed.
Doctor :
Have you followed?
User :   yea
Doctor :
Do you have any other query?
User :   they suggest Pregncare and follic acis
User :   I have chatted on this site few times before
User :   You are taking lot of time to answer
User :   Its not value for money
Doctor :   I am sorry, i was looking at your previous chat history.
Doctor :
Pregnacare contains vitamins and minerals, you may use the same.
Doctor :
Have you followed?
User :   yes
Doctor :
Do you have any other query?
User :   my major concern is thalassemia- M worried whether she is taking the right tablets
User :   to supplement her
Doctor :
Thalessemia minor is a asymptomatic condition
Doctor :
and it rarely causes trouble during pregnancy.
User :   ok
User :   what level of hemoglobin levels should worry me
Doctor :
The iron and folic acid supplements are to prevent the complication of anemia from occuring.
Doctor :
Which by itself is also a rare event.
Doctor :
The other vitamins and minerals that she is been using(pregnacare) are for safe pregnancy.
Doctor :
hence do not worry much.
Doctor :
The only suggestion that i would recommend now is that
Doctor :
you keep a track of her hemoglobin.
Doctor :
hemoglobin levels below 8mg/dl needs attention.
User :   ok
User :   thanks- byee for now- Any other important thing i should be aware
Doctor :   Other care during the pregnancy which includes good diet and excercise has to be followed.
Doctor :
I would mention a few symptoms of anemia to you.
User :   great
Doctor :
Symptoms such as fatiguability, extreme tiredness and weakness, palpitaitons
Doctor :
breathing difficulties, appearance of pale
Doctor :
skin color.
User :   what about fast heart beat
Doctor :
They can be present both with pregnancy and anemia.
User :   ok
Doctor :
so if most of the above symptoms
User :   ok
Doctor :
are present, you may have to think of anemia.
Doctor :
Have you followed?
Doctor :
Do you have any other query?
