User :   My wife, 29 years old, is 5 months pregnant. Should she take the tetanus vaccine? She received a booster dose 2 years ago.
Doctor :   Hi
User :   Hi
Doctor :
Let me read it
Doctor :
Yes she should take it
Doctor :
as per the gynecologist's advice
Doctor :
there is no harm in taking an extra dose
Doctor :
and should not be denied
Doctor :
for the benefit of doubt
Doctor :
and is very vital as well
User :   Before we proceed, could you tell me something about yourself?
Doctor :   I am Dr.Bharath, MBBS

User :   According to the WHO the tetanus vaccine is given only "For women who did not receive any dose earlier in life"
Doctor :
Doctor :
The DPT vaccines given in the normal schedule itself
Doctor :
is sufficient for a life time
User :   Since my wife received a tetanus booster 2 years ago, why does she need it again?
User :   The WHO clearly says that she doesn't.
Doctor :
but for practical benefits, we advise the tetanus boosters even after minor cuts if it is more than 6 months
Doctor :   You will have to go with the protocol practised in India

User :   my wife hasn't had any major or minor injuries recently.
Doctor :
though WHO recommendation cannot be denied
Doctor :
Not that she has injuries
Doctor :
it is done as a preventive one
Doctor :
as she shall have bleeding and injuries during delivery
User :   Ok, then as I understand, it is optional?
User :   She could have a booster AFTER delivery, right?
Doctor :   It is done at this stage and the recommended Antenatal care clearly states that

User :   So the WHO says one thing and the protocol in India says another. So the decision can be left to me and my wife?
Doctor :
Rather than that
Doctor :
You can take the opinion of our Gynecologist
Doctor :
You can take her second opinion
User :   Here is another web site that says "Your health care provider may recommend a tetanus and diphtheria (Td) booster shot if you haven't had one in 10 or more years or if you have a deep cut during your pregnancy." WWW.WWWW.WW Doctor :   I cannot comment on all the info on the net

Doctor :
Rather I can give you a picture of what is practised in India
Doctor :
as I am more aware of the Practise here
User :   The site is a prestigious one, Mayo Clinic.
Doctor :   Yes I am aware of it

User :   Alright, I think my wife and I will take a decision ourselves. Thank You
Doctor :   Ok

Doctor :
