User :   History: I am 42 y/o, female with fibromyalgia but no other health problems. I am overweight and sedentary d/t the fibro. Today's concern: I woke up from a nap yesterday with my right eye itching. It was more torward the inner canthus but I also had itching on the right temple. Like a dummy, I rubbed my eye. The eyelids (both upper and lower) and surrounding area including the temple, down my cheek and partially on my chin became red and itched worse. I used a cold compress and allergy medication thinking that I had a contact dermtitis reaction to something. The eyelid swelling reduced and the itching subsided. This morning, the swelling in the right eyelid was worse. The eye was swollen almost shut. The inner canthus and on the near area of the nose being the worst. There is also puffiness on the upper eyelid and below the eye in the more sinusitus area. The eye itself has no redness, no pain, no blood, and the vision is clear except what is affected by the oversized eyelid. I took Ibruprofen and allergy medication again this morning and within 30 minutes swelling did reduce and the itching subsided. Other than very minimal tearing, there is no discharge and the eyelids were not crusted this morning when I woke, just swollen. I cannot see a bite mark and was not stung. The eyelids are not red. There are no lumps. The tissue is soft, only swollen. No fever. BP 118/65. NOS. What other information do you need?

User :   Thank you. I am using a claritin type allergy medication, would benedryl be better? It does not present like pink eye and I do not see signs of conjunctivitis. If those symptoms do appear, I will seek appropriate treatment for the medication necessary.
Doctor :   Conjunctivitis classically presents with redness, irritation and discharge
Doctor :   Hence observe for these
Doctor :   Benadryl is better for itching or irritation but it is a sedative
Doctor :   Claritin serves for the same purpose without sedation
User :   20 years ago, I worked as an Opthalmic tech, so I did not think I had an emergency, but wanted to chat with someone who is more knowledgeable than my guesswork.

User :   I very much appreciate your time today. You have eased my mind. Thank you!
Doctor :   Thanks for consulting me today
Doctor :   Bye for now
