User :   hi i have a hard bump on my mastoid bone behind my ear. it has been there for a long time--seems to get a little smaller and then larger but never goes away. i've noticed it on and off for almost a year. i also think i might have a scalp infection--sores on my scalp and itching. are these related?
Doctor :   hi
Doctor :
yes these are related
User :   do i need to get treatment?
Doctor :
it is the lymph node in the region of the mastoid that is swollen
Doctor :   do you have fever?
User :   no
User :   no fever and i feel fine otherwise
Doctor :
any other symptom?
User :   no
Doctor :   does the swelling is causing any discomfort?
User :   it is really hard and feels like its bone but its round like ab bump
User :   it doesn't hurt
Doctor :
if its not growing in size and if there is no problem from it it can be left like that only
Doctor :
because the treatment for the swelling
Doctor :
is surgical excision
User :   but do you think i have a scalp infection that is causing it and needs to be treated?
Doctor :
you dont have fever, you dont have any other symptom other then the swelling
Doctor :
it is very unlikely that you have active scalp infection
User :   ok i was worried it could be cancer because it is a hard bump but my sister in law is a doctor and felt it and said she was not concerned either. my scalp is acting up right now with scaling and red bumps--i think i have either psorasis or something else
Doctor :   the scalp issue need to be resolved it might be the usual dandruff or the scalp psorasis or the seborrhea dermatitis of the scalp
Doctor :   that needs an expert dermatologist physical consultation
User :   ok, i have a dermatologist that i can see
Doctor :   he might take a scraping of the scales and do some tests or by just looking at the type of scaling he will be able to decide what it is
User :   ok thanks for your help
Doctor :
as far as the swelling is concerned right now you need not worry about it
Doctor :   is there any thing else i can help you with?
User :   so did the lymph node swell and harden because of the scalp issues?
User :   why does that happen? just curious. its been like that for a year.
Doctor :   any swelling in the region of the mastoid is usually the lymphnode
Doctor :
some time the swelling might give rise to abscess formation and calcification
Doctor :
once the calcification occurs it remains hard
User :   got it
