User:I was diagnosed with Strep Throat yesterday and given penicillin (prescribed to take twice a day). This morning my fever finally went away (after 3 days of high fever) and my sore throat is much better. But, my uvula is extremely swollen to the point it is touching the back of my tongue and gagging me. I have never had this happen before.
How long will it take for the penicillin to reduce the swelling of my uvula? What is the best home remedy I can use to help? It is driving me crazy!
Doctor:Hello I am Dr. XXXXXXX
Doctor:Please give me a minute to go through your questions
Doctor:It will take one or two more days for the uvula to reduce in size
Doctor:since the sore throat is now reduced, uvula will also get better.
Doctor:You can help it reduce faster by doing salt water gargling
User:will ibuprofen help reduce the swelling?
User:I am having PRK eye surgery tomorrow and I am hoping to speed up the healing process of my throat so I am not so miserable!

Doctor:Yes, ibuprofen will also help reduce the swelling
User:Last question...what causes the uvula to swell and how do I prevent it in the future? I have had strep throat many times and never had this happen before.
Doctor:You should inform you eye doctor about your sore throat before surgery

Doctor:Uvula swells because of the infection itself, it is not necessary for it swell up each time you have infection
