My husband has been diagnised with a RBS of 230 mg/dl. He also has FBS 130 mg/dl and PPBS of 166 mg/dl. Is this too high ? I am worried . Once diabetic always a diabetic?
User:I would like to get some opinion from you reg my husband
Doctor:Yes, the reports are concerning and suggest that he may have developed diabetes.
User:He is aged abt 38
User:This is the first time diagnosis
User:Is this too high or just border line?
Doctor:The current cut of limits for diabetes is fasting at 126mg/dly
Doctor:and post prandial at 160mg/dl
User:ok, so marginally high?
User:His lab report showed normal ranges way too low. So i got really worried
Doctor:No, then normal limits for fasting blood sugar is 104mg/dl
Doctor:and post prandial is 140mg/dl.
Doctor:So when compared to normal limits the values are definitely raised.
User:That's right. This is what the report had
Doctor:But as per the latest report, we label a patient as diabetic
Doctor:when the values go beyond the cut of limit what I mentioned earlier.
Doctor:Between the normal limit and the cut of value
Doctor:we call it prediabetic state.
User:ok got it
User:What should be the precutions
Doctor:Accordingly your husband had diabetes. I think we need to start him hypoglycemic drugs.
Doctor:Some doctor choose to repeat the values after strict dietary and exercise shedule.
Doctor:I also recommend the second line of action.
Doctor:I mean, he needs to be on strict low calorie diet.
User:Would you prescribe some medication
Doctor:Anything that is sweet needs to be avoided.
Doctor:In addition, encourage him to do cardioexercise
Doctor:Early morning brisk walking, jogging and thread mill.
User:Rice to be avoided as well? He can't do without it :(
Doctor:You may repeat the test after a months time with strict diet/exercise regimen.
Doctor:A decision to start medication can be decided accordingly.
Doctor:He needs to take minimum of rice or rice made dishes like idli/dosa.
User:ok. Can he become normal or non-diabetic? or will be ever be a diabetic with varying levels?
Doctor:I suggest my patients to take not more than one meal with rice or rice containing products. For example not more than 2 idly/dosa in a day.
Doctor:if he take dosa/idli for breakfast, the other meal shouldn't contain rice in it.
Doctor:If there is not rice containing breakfast
Doctor:not more than one bowl of rice.
Doctor:is allowed.
Doctor:Let me follow this schedule and other advices as suggested by his doctor/dietician.
Doctor:Repeat the test again after a month or two
Doctor:along with Hba1c test
User:sure, will do
Doctor:decision to start medicine can be taken accordingly.
User:ok thankyou!
Doctor:Important is if he has unusual symptoms while on this regimen, consult a doctor at the earliest.
Doctor:Do you have any other query?
User:Nothing for now
User:Thanks a lot
Doctor:Thanks for consulting me.
Doctor:Bye for now.
