I have had severe Right buttock pain and hip pain for several weeks. I had an MRI and it shows mild early degenerative disc disease @L4-L5 and L5 to S1
L4-L5 there is a disffuse mild disc budlge mot prominet in the posterior central region 14 mm and L5-S1 diffuse mild disc buldge 12mm
What does this mean?
User :   can you please tell me if this means I have a buldging disc or herniated disc?
Doctor :   There will be discs made of cartilage between the vertebral bones
Doctor :   the degeneration of the discs may be age related or even based on the physical strain on the discs
Doctor :   disc bulge is a imminent feature of degeneration
Doctor :   may i know your age and gender ?
User :   Im 39 year old female I run marathons
Doctor :   do you have numbness in the lower back ?
User :   no
User :   the pain is mostly in my buttock and hip on one side
User :   they told me it may also be SI joint problem
Doctor :   yes, both can be cause for the low back ache
Doctor :   since its one side i would co more in favor of nerve compression due to disc bulge
Doctor :   as its a typical presentation of the same
User :   it is only a buldge and not herniated... is that correct?
Doctor :   yes,
Doctor :   bulge could be a precursor of herniation
User :   ok... also is 14mm very mild ?
Doctor :   any heavy weight lifting for long may cause herniation
Doctor :   yes , considered
Doctor :   but you are at risk
User :   do you think I will be able to continue to run?
Doctor :   run is not a problem , but rising from a sitting or squatting position , lifting heavy weights from the floor would be risky
User :   ok thank you so much for your help!
Doctor :   you are welcome
Doctor :   Thanks for consulting me
Doctor :   kindly provide your feedback
User :   sure
Doctor :   Bye for now
Doctor :   Take care
