Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :
How can I help you?
User :   My wife is 8 weeks pregnant. She had fish poisioning. What are the risks to the baby
Doctor :
What are her symptoms now?
User :   joint pains and parts of the body is itchy
Doctor :
User :   initially she had very severe joints pains
Doctor :
Do you mean she has allergic reaction after eating fish?
User :   no
User :   its food poisioning
User :   i mean she ate fish that was poisioned
Doctor :
How do you know it is poisoned?
User :   coz of the symptoms
User :   the whole family has got the same symptoms
User :   we want to know as she is pregnant how will it affect the baby inside
Doctor :   unless we know the precise nature of the illness and the causative agent, it would be difficult to say if it would present a hazard to a pregnancy.
Doctor :   There are poisonous fishes, there are fishes which are poisoned by some metals like mercury
Doctor :   so we have to know what is the agent in them
Doctor :
As such the fish allergy does not cause any problem
Doctor :   Did your family members meet a Doctor?
User :   yes
User :   we were given B12 injection
Doctor :   Ok
User :   a pain killer
Doctor :
Doctor :
What did he opine about the agent
Doctor :
What could have been the cause of the fish poisoning?
User :   he didnt do any test though. so he cant say much
User :   It could be some seaweed the fish must have eaten
Doctor :
Do all the family members have similar symptoms?
User :   or old fish that was thawed or defrozed many times and sold again
Doctor :
Joint pain and rash?
User :   yes
Doctor :   Do you guyz still have the symptoms
Doctor :   When did the episode happened?
User :   yes
Doctor :
I mean when did you eat fish and when did the symptoms start?
User :   for the last 5 days
Doctor :
any nausea, vomiting or diarrhea to the mother
Doctor :
Abdominal pain or bleeding from the vagina to the mother?
User :   nausea and vommitting only
User :   no abdominal pain or bleeding
Doctor :
Any hospitalisation?
Doctor :
How many episodes of vomiting?
User :   as i said only B12 injection
User :   and panadol
User :   she is pregnant so the doctors didnt give anything else
Doctor :
Ok , what did they give others?
User :   Painkiller and anti itchy tablets
User :   + B 6 tablets
Doctor :
Doctor :
So she has no major illness apart from joint pain, itch and an episode of vomiting
User :   Vommitting and nausea had been there from before- I mean from normal pregnancy
User :   apart from that no other illiness
Doctor :
Ok with what you have said, I opine that the illness is not major should not have an impact on the growing baby in her womb
User :   ok
Doctor :   Two key elements are favorable in your case.

User :   what are those?
Doctor :   It was fairly early in your wife's pregnancy, but not during a period of rapid cell development and your wife have apparently suffered no ill effects.

User :   when does rapid cell develpt happen? in how many weeks
Doctor :   Since you did not have a significant illness yourself requiring hospitalization, and you did not miscarry, the insult was probably minor.

Doctor :   Sorry I mean your wife
Doctor :   The rapid cell development happens in the early 2 to 4 weeks
User :   how can we be sure its not a miscarriage
Doctor :
An Ultrasound and serial titres of Beta HCG
User :   whats serial titres
Doctor :   There is a rule here, if there is no infection in the amniotic fluid then the baby is safe
Doctor :   Your wife has no symptoms of infection in the amniotic fluid
Doctor :
like vaginal discharge, severe abdominal pain
Doctor :
User :   what is amniotic fluid?
User :   ok
Doctor :
It is the bag of fluid in her womb, in which the baby is present
User :   vaginal discharge- Can you further elaborate on this
Doctor :
You may want to confirm this by an Ultrasound of the abdomen and the serum Beta HCG titres
User :   what is serum beta HCG titres?
Doctor :
It is a fluid in the color of the blood or brownish that comes out of the vagina
User :   white discharge
Doctor :
Serum Beta HCG is a hormone in the blood that failitates in pregnancy
User :   so whats your final conclusion
Doctor :
I opine that your baby is safe enough you can confirm by an Ultrasound and Beta HCG titres
Doctor :
You may take a second opinion from a Gynecologist too
