User :   hi my name is XXXXXXXX i just got diagnosed with hodgkins lymphoma on january 28
2010 and i just finished everything june 28th-2010 and i had 7 treatments of
chemo and 1 month of radiation. My fiance and i are wanting to get pregnant and
i keep on hearing different answers. They first said (oncologist) six months now
a year and three years! I asked my radiologist and he said once my first pet
scan clears i will be okay to start trying. I have also asked the PA's in the
office as well and they said after my first pet scan. What would you prefer and
recommend? I'm 22 years old and my doctor says i need to start having kids
sooner than later because of my chemo so im just confused on what to do. thank
Doctor :   Hi,
Doctor :   Dr xxxxx here
User :   Hi
User :   thanks for helping me
Doctor :   please give me sometime to read your post
User :   ok
Doctor :   Ok,
Doctor :   I would go with what radiologist say
Doctor :   During chemo its vary dangerous to concieve
User :   really? so you think once my first pet scan clears you think i would be okay to try to get pregnant?
Doctor :   Yes,
User :   im completely done with my chemo and with my radiation.
User :   do you know any familiar cases like mine?
Doctor :   Yes,
Doctor :   i have gone through a case who conceived but much later after PET scan
Doctor :   around six months
User :   would you say they're any consequence if i end up do getting pregnant
User :   my first pet scan is in september and i just want to make sure around then if i would be okay, i would be about 3 months out
Doctor :   only risk of the after effects of chemo shuld be considered
User :   which is what?
Doctor :   Miscarriages often are recorded within 6 months of chemo
Doctor :   that is the after effect
User :   so then what month would you say is okay to start trying then since its been already almost 4 months out. shoudl i wait another 2 or should it be okay after september when i clear my pet scan?
Doctor :   hence i would suggest to keep a minimum time of 6 months after the end of chemo
User :   ok thats what we needed to know
Doctor :   since your PET is in sep and its more than 2 months from now
Doctor :   it would be better to go for it a month or two after pet scan
User :   one more question.. I am having horrible side effects right now such as headaches and a fevor and heartburns horribly is that apart of the process of healing or is it something i should be worried about?
User :   my doctors thinks its a sinus infection but im having a hard time believing it..
Doctor :   No need to worried about it relating to conception
Doctor :   you may need a good physical examination and symptomatic treatment for the problems ( side effects)
User :   ok, how long does it normally take for myself to get back to being compeletly normal?
Doctor :   it dapends on the general fitness
Doctor :   i mean body built and prechemo health
User :   so the way i take care of myself and my eating habbits?
Doctor :   Thats absolutely rite
User :   ok so im eating constantly but i get horrible heartburns out of no where. is that apart of the process?
Doctor :   Yes , they are desired side effects of both chemo and radio
User :   should that go away in a matter of time or will i have that for the pregnancy
Doctor :   its self limiting , you can speed up its end by taking antacids
User :   ok, so what is the percentage of my cancer coming back during pregnancy or in future and what would i do if it did come back when i was pregnant?
Doctor :   I am sorry , this would be well answered by your oncologist, as he know the details and the severity of the disease
User :   ok thats fine, i understand.. is their anything else you recommend me doing or do you think everything is okay with what u have heard so far?
User :   our main concern is the pregnancy because we would like to start trying but it was just a matter of when
Doctor :   yes, its alright , only thing i would recommend is to increase the multivitamin supplements, which are needed after chemo and radio
Doctor :   I think you got the idea about when to concieve
User :   ya, is it normal my menstrual cycles are a little off and im having horrible cramps?
Doctor :   Yes, its normal
User :   as far as the sun, can i be exposed or should i lay low for a while?
Doctor :   Its better, to lay low
User :   ok doctor xxxx thank u for your time we really appreciate it'
Doctor :   because photo dermatitis is expected in people on chemo
User :   i will make sure to write a positive feedback
Doctor :   Thanks for consulting
User :   well you helped us out quite a bit
Doctor :   refer your friends for our service
User :   will do! have a good night!
User :   take care
