User :   My four year old daughter is complaining of severe pain in her clitoris. It looks slightly swollen and appears to be very sensitive. I have taken her to emergency (about two weeks ago) because the pain was making her cry out - she was very distressed. The nurses who saw her thought it might be pain in the general location of her private parts and thought it might be worms (even though they could find no evidence of a worms). We all took anti-worm medication, but her symptoms have persisted. Besides which, she is very particular that the pain is in her vagina, although we think it is specifically her clitoris. Prior to that, a GP thought it was sensitivity to soaps (we did have to stop using fabric softener because it gave her rashes) and told us to put a little vinegar in the bath water to make it acidic. We bath her regularly, so I don't think it's a hygiene issue.
We have made an appointment for her with our GP, but that is a week away.
Any ideas?

Doctor :   is there any rash or redness visible?
User :   No, although she does tend to get a little odorous at times, but it is mild
User :   no rash, but it looks red
Doctor :   ok. was any other medication prescribed for her?
User :   no
Doctor :   ok. while giving her bath, do you tend to use soap in to clean her private parts?
User :   no, we get her to wash herself there - although we usually use bath soap in the water
Doctor :   ok. avoid using bath soap in water, do not let any soap or soap water get in that place
User :   ok
User :   my wife is bathing her now - without soap i think, i'll check
Doctor :   ok
User :   yep, just warm water with vinegar
User :   do you think that's the cause?
Doctor :   for the itching and discomfort you can give her Syrup Allrest 5ml two times a day
Doctor :   i will explain
User :   ok, i'll get some - is it an over-the-counter medication?
Doctor :   vaginal pH gets disturbed with teh soap or soap water getting there, making it dry and itchy, and with rubbing on fabric, it tends to hurt the soft parts like clitoris and labia
Doctor :   yes it is an over the counter medication
Doctor :   you can also apply Caladryl lotion over the red parts after cleaning with sterile cotton
Doctor :   leave her without the undergarments for a few days untill this gets better
User :   Ok
User :   anything else i should do?
Doctor :   these should help her out
User :   Thanks doctor, much appreciated!
Doctor :   if she still continues to get the discomfort then try to get an urgent appointment with a gynecologist/urologist
Doctor :   is there anything else I can help you with?
User :   Righto, I will.
User :   No, thanks very much for your help.
Doctor :   thanks for consulting me. bye for now.
