User :   our entire family had the stomach virus. each lasting about a week. Our oldes son got over it for about a week and then caught it again. Is this normal. His ped. thinks it is just another virus. gave him some meds Zofran to calm his stomach and told us to give him some pepto bismol. Your thoughts? At what point do you start runing tests?
Doctor :   Hi
User :   hello
Doctor :
Viral infection is a most common infection.
Doctor :
It is not unusual to have recurrent viral infections.
Doctor :
It can be due to the same virus or a different strain of the virus.
Doctor :   These infections usually settle on its own.
Doctor :
Only if the symptoms persists, the tests are needed.
Doctor :
May I know the age of your son?
User :   at what point do you start to think it is something more serious? He has not had a fever or doesn't feel bad. My wife is worried about childhood serious illiness like cancer? How long is it normal for the syptoms to last. He is 8
Doctor :   As I said the viral infections usually settle down on its own.
User :   thank youhttp://www.healthcaremagic.com/web/images/ui/cancelIcon.png
Doctor :
The seriousness of the conditions depends on the symptoms that he has.
Doctor :
So if you can provide me with the details of the symptoms then I may be able to help you better.
User :   diarhhea nd vomits occasionallu
Doctor :
How many episodes of diarrhea does he have per day?
Doctor :
Are you there?

Doctor :   Hi
User :   he has had about 5 or six episodes of diarhhea a day and has thrown up last friday night, sat night and this morning
Doctor :   Is he able to eat?
Doctor :
Apart on a few occasions when he vomits?
User :   yes a brat diet is what we have him on. he vommits once and then thats all each time he does it.
Doctor :
Ok.
Doctor :
How are his symptoms now, do you feel its improving or stable or is it getting worse since the last 3 days?
User :   they are stable. and slighlty improving until this morning when he threw up. he seem like he feels fine. his doc thinks that taking the pepto will help with the diarrhea and he should start to feel better?
Doctor :
Ok.
Doctor :
I shall explain it to you.
Doctor :
The seriousness of the condition depends on the severity of the symptoms.
Doctor :
As I had already mentioned viral infections are self limiting and usually settle on its self.
Doctor :
What is really needed is replenishment of the lost fluid.
Doctor :
If you can replenish the fluid that is lost either by diet or through by fluids that is sufficient.
Doctor :
The medications are good.
Doctor :
You can continue these.
Doctor :
I would also recommend
Doctor :
you to give him lactobacillus supplements which is needed to
Doctor :
supplement the loss of normal bacteria that is present in the gut.
Doctor :
This is needed to prevent serious bacterial infections.
Doctor :
The lactobacillus supplements are available as sporolac sachets which can be given by mixing in a cup of water and fed twice daily.
Doctor :
If these symptoms persists for more than 5 days or if the diarrheal episodes increases, then he may need the tests.
Doctor :
Have you followed?
User :   yes, He is drinking lots of gatorade. He is taking those lactobacillus tablets as well. Thanks for your advice.
Doctor :
And finally these viral infections mainly spreads through
Doctor :
contaminated food and water.
Doctor :
So take care of the food and water he takes.
Doctor :
A healthy diet and hygeinic food alone can prevent the episodes from occurring again.
Doctor :
Do you have any other query?
User :   that is it, will do on the advice.. thanks
Doctor :   Hi\
