User :   i had protected sex with a female partner on saturday night. sunday i had developed a blotchy skin rash over my torso and arms.neither condom failed the twice we had sex and apart from kissing mouth to mouth there was no oral, unprotected or otherwise. is there any chance of transfer in removing the condoms?i had been ill two weeks prior with a cough / cold (producing phlegm). is it likely the virus is related to the cold i had? i'm extremely worried about HIV having googled the symptoms...
thank you for any help you can give me.
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   Dr XXXX here
Doctor :   let me read your query
User :   sorry not virus, i meant is it likely the rash is related to the cold i had
User :   and still do have
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   So you had cold like symptoms since 2 weeks and you had sex just the last saturday ,.. is this right ?
Doctor :   Are you there ?
Doctor :   Do you have any fever, itching, etc ?
User :   thats correct
User :   the cold was non related
User :   i had sex saturday just gone
Doctor :   any loss of weight ?
User :   then noticed the rash on the sunday
User :   my entire band had the cold / chest infection type virus so i'm not concerned about that
Doctor :   other than the rash, do you have any other symptoms ?
User :   it was just the rash appearing sunday less than 24 hours after i had sex
User :   none
Doctor :   i dont think this could be HIV, as the presentation is too abrupt
User :   i'm still a bit poorly with this cold / chest infection / viral infection / whatever it may be
User :   the rash wouldn't present itself in 24hours would it? i've been told its at least two weeks but i wanted to make sure
User :   also i did use protection, and the female wasn't a sex worker, just someone i had met recently
Doctor :   no the rash presentation , looks like an allegic reaction or a prior viral infection, not HIV
User :   its not itchy
Doctor :   how big are the rash spots ? is there any acne like papules, ? and the color of the rash ?
Doctor :   are you there ?
User :   its like blotchy skin, flat and quite faint red/purple
Doctor :   So its been constantly present since 4-5 days ?
User :   yes
User :   i first noticed it sunday evening
User :   i wouldn't say its got any worse either. its just been as it was when i noticed it
Doctor :   I think, you may need a blood test to rule out any viruses spread by ticks or insects
Doctor :   have you travelled recently?
User :   only to XXXX
Doctor :   when was this?
User :   which was where i was when i had the sexual contact
User :   the day prior to noticing the rash
Doctor :   oh ok
Doctor :   you may need a CBC, platelet count , to check if you have low platelets
User :   what does that relate to?
Doctor :   it could be due to Hemorrhagic viruses, or typhus, or RMSF viruses
Doctor :   but those are associated with fever, and other symptoms
User :   i don't have other symptoms
Doctor :   I would suggest you take some benadryl for a few days, which will make the rash subside
User :   my main concern was just making sure there was no chance, what so ever, of hiv
Doctor :   no
Doctor :   protected sex, is not a cause of HIV
User :   even though already run down, the rash could not, ever, present itself that quickly could it?
Doctor :   as also, your presentation is very quick within 24 hrs
Doctor :   which is not seen in HIV
Doctor :   SO rest assured that HIV is not a cause in your case
User :   not in any case would the rash ever present that early?? its 10 days + right?
User :   excuse my persistance, i just want to stop worrying about having ruined my entire life
Doctor :   yes
Doctor :   NO , NOT TO WORRY, ITS NOT HIV in your case
User :   thank you for your time
Doctor :   you are welcome
User :   i'll consult my GP as soon as i get a chance.
Doctor :   yes
Doctor :   take care now
Doctor :   are you there ?
User :   sorry just one last thing, is it possible to have a viral infection and for a rash to appear towards the back end of it?
Doctor :   what do you mean by backend?
User :   i don't feel as sick as i did, i'm still coughing and producing some phlegm but in the beginning my throat was sore and i felt a lot more run down than i currently do, although the rash has only just appeared
Doctor :   it could be a remnent of the resp infection
User :   thats not abnormal no?
Doctor :   i mean the rash,
Doctor :   sometimes infection of viruses in a pt with prior infection with a resp infection can present in a pattern as in you
Doctor :   also cough may be persistant, due to post infection inflammatory
Doctor :   damage of resp tract
User :   the rash could be a remnant of the infection? cool. i will stop worrying and being so anxious now!
Doctor :   yes
Doctor :   that will be good
Doctor :   Do you have any other query
User :   thats it for now, thank you
Doctor :   bye for now
