Doctor :   Hi
User :   hi
User :   Hi, I have a few questions about hair growth and sinus troubles
User :   (two seperate issues)
Doctor :   ok , please proceed with them
User :   First I have noticed an increase in the rate of hair growth, I have always had a lot but now it seems it is growing faster both on my head and all over my body that it causes irritation. I have also had back acne that is tough to get rid of with salic acid or benzoyl peroxide. And finally I am developing a lot of gray hair at what I think is too young an age.
Doctor :   may i know your age ?
User :   yes, 27
Doctor :   ok
User :   any thoughts?
Doctor :   may i know if your on any medicines for any condition?
User :   yes, I currently take 2.5mg of valium / diazepam by suppository for spastic pelvic floor muscles. I also have been trying various sprays for my sinuses, but only for a few days at a time as none have worked.
User :   that's about it
User :   no vitamins or suppliments
Doctor :   ok , have you been any time on corticosteroids ?
User :   I think some of the nose sprays I have used have corticosteroids in them but I haven't been using any recently. I took prednisone for two weeks with an antibiotic for a sinus infection but that was over a year ago.
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :   let me explain it to you
Doctor :   this is very unusual to notice excessive hair growth all of a sudden
Doctor :   generally this is always a permanent condition present from teens
Doctor :   and known as hypertrichosis
User :   I wouldn't say it's completly sudden
User :   I have always had a lot
User :   but it continues to increase each year since my teens
Doctor :   if one notices this suddenly as in your case , increasing by the day , then it could be a side effect of the medications one uses
Doctor :   as i mentioned corticosteroids and immuno suppressants drugs and cancer related drugs cause this
Doctor :   I do not think the drug you are on will cause hair growth
Doctor :   may i know if you deal with lot of stress , what is your occupation ?
User :   I was an electronics engineer, but I quit almost a year ago to work part time and go back to school. I had some other health issues with the spastic pelvic muscles so I decided to delay school for a year so I have been able to reduce my stress greatly. But when I was an engineer I worked 12-16 hours days frequently.
Doctor :   ok
User :   I now go to the gym every other day and my stress has dropped a lot.
User :   I will return to school full time in a month.
Doctor :   that is good to know
Doctor :   ok , how is your diet and how is your appetite
User :   strong appetite, I try to eat relatively healthy, mix of vegetables, poultry, fish, little to no red meat these days
Doctor :   ok
User :   grains
User :   drink plenty of water
Doctor :   regarding the graying of hair , does it run in your family , I meant early graying ?
User :   coffee in the morning
User :   not that I know of
Doctor :   ok
User :   my father went gray much faster than his brother
Doctor :   i would want to share with you that graying of hair is familial
Doctor :   and related to one's vitamin and nutrition levels
User :   can the flouride in tap water cause gray hair?
Doctor :   if there has been a factor of stress , then the graying occurs more quickly
Doctor :   yes , it can lead to gray hair
Doctor :   I would suggest you follow the same diet you are on , and add on a good multivitamin with zinc in it
User :   ok, I can try this, can I expect that this might reverse the gray hair?
User :   or more likely just slow the process of change?
Doctor :   no , it will prevent the new hair from getting grey
Doctor :   hair growth has many stages
Doctor :   the important stage being anagen phase where new hair develops
Doctor :   this happens when telogen phase , the phase of hair fall hapens giving way for new hair to re emerge
Doctor :   hence when the new hair develops there will be little of gray starnds
Doctor :   this process takes 3 months normally
Doctor :   hence we suggest a good multivitamin for this duration
User :   ok, I see
User :   thank you, and how about treating the rapid and excess growth?
Doctor :   it has to be treated by hair removal methods and there are no studies that helped patients to contain this problem with a definitive treatment
User :   ok, so you wouldn't suspect there's some kind of hormonal issues or something that can be treated that way?
Doctor :   no , I do not see hormones as the reason here
Doctor :   I would suggest you see a dermatologist for an examination and also get the acne checked
User :   ok
Doctor :   one of the few reasons would be stress and malnutrition
Doctor :   which i feel is not the cause right now in you
Doctor :   hence i suggest you to see the dermatologist
User :   ok
Doctor :   i hope i was able to help you
Doctor :   did you follow my suggestions ?
User :   yes thank you very much
Doctor :   ok , are there any more questions for me to help you with ?
User :   I will try the multivitamin and try to see a dermatologist at some point
User :   yes, one other
User :   you may not have any other ideas, but I did want to ask about my sinuses
User :   I had surgery 15+ years ago
Doctor :   sure , please proceed
Doctor :   ok
User :   and since then have had mucus drip problems 24/7
Doctor :   ok
User :   I have had lots of CT scans, they say the anatomy looks normal and would not benefit from more surgery
User :   but I have bad mucus 24/7 that drips
User :   and I have to snort and swallow all the time
User :   and it feels like doors opening and closing in my sinuses if I try to breath through my nose
User :   very uncomfortable
User :   lots of mucus in my throught I sometimes struggle to breath
Doctor :   ok
User :   but there is no infection bacterial or fungal
Doctor :   ok
User :   I get bacterial infections once a year
User :   and treat with augmentin for 2 weeks
User :   but still have mucus the rest of the time
Doctor :   ok
User :   I have tried about 15-20 different sprays and irrigations
User :   and also allergy meds
User :   and I get allergy shots every few weeks
User :   am at the maintenance dose level now
Doctor :   ok
User :   still a major problem though
User :   any thoughts?
Doctor :   ok
User :   I've tried saline rinses and irrigations
Doctor :   since i am a general physician
User :   like netti pot
Doctor :   i would suggest you to take an ENT opinion on this
Doctor :   as i see you have tried good measures to deal with it
User :   ok, I will discuss with them again
User :   thank you very much for your assistance
Doctor :   this could be of good help for you
User :   great
Doctor :   you may consider this , if needed
User :   thank you
Doctor :   i hope i answered all your questions
Doctor :   pleasure here
User :   yes
Doctor :   thanks for consulting me
Doctor :   take care
