User :   Hi there,
The condom broke when my gf and I were having sex last night. She took Norlevo within 2 hours of this happening. She is currently in her ovulation period (day 14-15). Does Norlevo have the same effect during the ovulation period?
How quickly would the sperm have fertilized the egg?
Thanks.
Doctor :   Hi
User :   hi
Doctor :   May I know if the medication(Norlevo) that your partner took was a 750micorgram tablet or 1.5mg tablet.
User :   it says 750
Doctor :   Sperms can be viable inside the womb for a period of 3-5 days and the ovum is viable for 5-7days.
User :   she took two tablets at the same time as she was advised
Doctor :   If there are no preventive measures taken, fertilization can occur within few hours.
Doctor :   *taking into consideration, she has ovulated now.
Doctor :   If fertilization does happen, the emergency contraceptive drugs that she took will make the environment of the uterus not suitable for implantation of the fertilized ova.
Doctor :   Hence, its good that your partner has taken the medication soon.
User :   oh ok how long does the medication stay in her body for this effect?
Doctor :   The effectiveness of the medication are the max during the first few days after taking them.
Doctor :   The effects slowly starts to wean of in the next 1 week.
User :   ok great so will this be enough for her or will she need more medication?
Doctor :   The contraceptive pill has its maximum effects for a week and slowly starts to fade away.
Doctor :   1.5mg of medication taken before 72hours will prevent fertilization and implantation of the ova.
Doctor :   This dose is sufficient.
Doctor :   Have you followed what I have suggested?
User :   ok great thank you, just to confirm after the medication wears away then implantation cant from the time we had intercourse?
Doctor :   Yes, implantation usually happens within 3-5 days following fertilization.
Doctor :   The dose of the medication has its maximum effects for the next 3 days and slowly starts weaning away.
Doctor :   However the effectiveness can last for more than a week, sufficient enough time to prevent implantation.
Doctor :   Hence preventing pregnancy.
User :   great thank you for your help
Doctor :   At this point of time, I would also like you to understand that this happens for almost 90-95% of time.
Doctor :   Hence the chances of pregnancy are significantly reduced.
User :   thanks, that is all I needed to confirm
Doctor :   Do you have any other query?
User :   no that is fine
User :   thanks for the help
Doctor :   Thanks for consulting me.
Doctor :   Bye for now.
User :   bye
