User :   I pricked myself with a needle used to give a cat sub qutaneous fluids. It was a used needle and cut the top of my index finger while I was trying to put on a new needle. I flushed the area with water and soap and used perixode. Does it warrant a trip to the doctor
Doctor :   Hi
User :   hello
Doctor :   Is the cat your pet cat?
User :   yes
User :   yes
Doctor :   Is your cat healthy?
User :   She is suffering from kidney disease and is an indoor only cat.
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   Let me explain to you.
Doctor :   Infection are known to spread with needle prick injuries.
Doctor :   If the needle that you used contained specks of cat blood or body fluid, and if your cat is infected, then there are chances of infection.
Doctor :   the chances again are dependent on when the needle was used the last time.
User :   it was used about a week ago
Doctor :   prolong exposure to the environment effectively kills almost all blood borne infective organism, and in that case you have relatively less to nil chances of infection.
Doctor :   So I would say, if the needle was used a week ago, no specks of blood stains were on the needle and the prick was not deep or into a blood vessel
Doctor :   then you can relax.
Doctor :   Your chances of getting an infection or a serious concern is almost nil to zero.
Doctor :   Have you followed what I have suggested?
User :   yes
Doctor :   Do you have any other query?
Doctor :   * chances of infection is less to nil, I mean
User :   what would be a preventive treatment, or what should I watch for?
Doctor :   Watch out for fever, rashes, body aches, lymphnode swelling development.
Doctor :   Alternatively you can consider getting a few tests after 2 weeks from now.
Doctor :   the tests include the following
Doctor :   1. HIV RNA PCR test
Doctor :   2. Mycoplasma haemofelis PCR test.
Doctor :   These 2 tests need to be considered, if you have any doubts with presence of cat blood/body fluid on the needle before the prick
Doctor :   or if the prick was deep or into a blood vessel.
Doctor :   Have you followed what I have suggested?
User :   Yes.
Doctor :   Do you have any other query?
User :   No,thanks.
Doctor :   Thanks for consulting me.
Doctor :   Bye for now.
User :   thanks, bye
