User :   HI. I was diagnosed with pelvic inflammatory disease a few years ago as a result of a clamydia infec tion from a former partner. My boyfriend and I want to have a child. I was wondering if it was still possible for me to get pregnant. I have heard that the infection can cause infertility due to scarred tubes etc. Should I be checked for this before hand? I'm not sure how I would go about it. I am 32 and have regular periods every 28 days still and am otherwise healthy.
Doctor :   Hi , I am Dr AAAAAAA
Doctor :   Let me go through your query.
Doctor :   Ok.
Doctor :   I have gone through.
Doctor :   First things first,to answer your question I would say that you can very well get pregnant.
User :   oh good, that makes me feel a little better
Doctor :   Let me explain to you in a detailed way, but before that could you tell me when exactly ddi you have the PID?
User :   about 5 years ago
Doctor :   So you can very well go ahead as what usual statistics suggest is that continuous or at least PID thrice in a woman can cause adhesions & infertility.
Doctor :   But the best way to rule out the adhesions or see if you fallopian tubes are patent is to go for a Hysteroscopy.
Doctor :   Hope you have followed.
User :   is a hysteroscopy dangerous?
Doctor :   No,Not dangerous absolutely.
User :   how likely is the chance of scarring from one time of pid?
Doctor :   It is just like endoscopy or any other scopy where they see, if your fallopian tubes are open(patent) or closed(adhesion) by a camera at the end of a long tube.
Doctor :   It is very minimal or less than 10%.
User :   I have a pap and physical scheduled should I talk to my regular doctor about checking for fertility with him or do i need to find a gynecologist
Doctor :   The chances of scarring are based on grading done based on clinical & pathological conditions & where it affected the pelvis - for example - the ovaries, fallopian tubes , the mesentry , did it spread to liver or any other place. So a lot depends on how it affected you.
Doctor :   Ok.
User :   I was hospitalized for it and given antibiotics but all they said was i had pid would they have told me then if there was permanent damage then?
Doctor :   The best thing would be better to discuss the whole history with your primary and he shall refer you to a gynecologist, I suggest that the gynecologist would be much better after you finish your primary consultation.
Doctor :   Yes very much, If there would have been some serious scarring , they would have mentioned about it on the discharge summary. And hence I feel that you have better chances for being pregnant rather than scarring or further inferility complications.
Doctor :   Have you followed?
User :   I have had cysts on my overies in the past as well and i was told once that one was blocking my tube and that it was twisted and had fluid in it. they wanted to remove it but i waited and 3 months later they said it was back to normal. Can that happen?
User :   yes, I am following you
Doctor :   Yeah, it can very much happen. Some cysts they resolve on their own. As I can see from your history, that you have regular periods indicating healthy ovaries as of now.
User :   If I did have damaged tubes and scarring would I have any symptoms?
Doctor :   So I think previous ovarian cysts would not complicate now, But as you will be seeing a gynec. I suggest you to go for an Ultrasonography scan which is very safe and non-invasive procedure.
Doctor :   If there are symptoms like fever, cervical motion tenderness, lower abdominal pain, new or different discharge, painful intercourse, or irregular menstrual bleeding.
Doctor :   Let me suggest you few steps...
Doctor :   1.As your periods are healthy I would first suggest you to be absolutely positive.
Doctor :   Are you there, hope you are following.
User :   yes i am here
Doctor :   2.In 90% of patients with only one instance of PID , a healthy pregnancy was very much possible.
User :   I am feeling much better already
Doctor :   3.Please take an expert opinion from a gynecologist and get an Ultrasonography & Hysteroscopy done.
User :   I will definitely do that
Doctor :   4. Take lots of fresh fruits, vegetables & juices and also some regular exercise.
User :   ok,thats no problem
Doctor :   5. Be optimistic about your health & your maternal instincts and for sure you will have a lovely baby.
User :   you have helped me more than u can imagine. i was so worried
User :   I have two boys but my boyfriend has no children and wants one so badly
Doctor :   And please do let me know after you finished your gynec consultation.
Doctor :   Is there any thing else you would like to know.Thank you for consulting me.
Doctor :   Bye for now.
