Pregnant with altered TSH levels. What is the treatment? Concerned about the effect of medication on the child - Online Doctor Chats
How can I help you today?
Hello, My wife is pregnant and she is in the 8th week now. As suggested by doctor, we have done all the blood tests and scan. Everything is normal except for haemoglobin(count -10) and TSH (7.22). 6 months back her TSH was 5.2. Can you please advise us what to do? Does this thyroid level affect the baby/ mother? My wife is a vegetarian and does not even have eggs, she has long stressful working hours. Currently she is quite stressed and unwell due to weakness and nausea. She is currently having Folic Acid pill and Pregnidoxin.
Can you please advise us what to do?
It is better to correlate with the weakness levels and t3 and t4 levels as well.
First thing is that do not worry about it.
It canbe taken care of with thyroid hormone supplements.
lets discuss on the thyroid first
is it mandatory to take any medication for this?
as she is in her 8th week now.....does the medication affect the child?
if she doesnt take medication, what are the repurcussions?
The medications that are given are actually thyroid hormones only.
The dose of the thyroid hormones should be titrated according to symptoms.
ask me anything specific if u need to know
my wife is sitting next to me
Was your wife taking thyroid supplements before pregnancy too?
her levels were normal earlier
6 months back it was 5.1
which was well within the range
What is the range of Tsh being used by your laboratory?
It must be written on the lab results.
for 21-54 years
So after pregnancy it has gone higher.
Did she get tested for other thyroid hormones as well?
from 5.07 in november to 7.22 now
T3, T4 levels?
not as of now....but earlier T3 and T4 were tested.....all were within range
I think it is better to get her tested for these hormones as well.
These hormones will tell if she needs supplements.
during pregnancy, is it normal to have such increase levels? or is there a problem?
Second thing is that normal thyroid hormone levels are required for better outcome of pregnancy.
so we need to get the complete test done again
TSH, T3, T4 need to be done this time.
once we get the report, whom should we go to?
You will need a prescription from your doctor.
will it be sufficient to go to a general physician?
As it involves the baby too.
'coz our gyna told us to consult a gen physician
is there any dietry/ lifestyle changes to control this hormone level?
Yes she should drink clean water and hygienic food.
And if she is prescribed medicines, she should monitor her thyroid levels closely.
Take lots of fruits and green vegetables.
Mostly women get some problem during pregnancy.
Thus do not worry and take adequate rest.
Most of these problems during pregnancy get better after baby is born
she also feels very hot sometimes
is it also related?
I think it may be due to weather.
It is the general discomfort of pregnancy only.
She should eat regular small meals to get relief from such discomfort.
normal sal does have iodine?rite?
like ashirwad or tata?
You may want to check on the label.
i ll check on the packet
nothin to worry?
Well if her thyroid is well- controlled then I will not worry.
Repeat the test as soon as possible.
will it be a fasting test?
I am not sure.
I think it is not.
thanks a lot doctor
for your suggestions
Hope I helped
