User :   "hello I received a hcg test from quest diagnostics and it says something about 458 h out of range. It then says: Non Pregnant or Premenopausal reference range
Doctor :   Hi,
Doctor :   The hormone will exist in very low amounts normally the above ranges are references for the same
User :   It was a blood test to determine if I'm pregnant or not
Doctor :   Since the hormone levels in you are high , i would like to know the reason for getting the test
User :   I just do not understand the wording
Doctor :   Ok, may I know when was your last menstrual period ?
User :   I'm not sure but I missed my period for 2 weeks and half now
User :   I believe
Doctor :   Ok, since the blood HCG levels are high, It shows the confirms the pregnancy in you
User :   ok so what does the reference range
Doctor :   You may need an Ultrasound to strengthen the diagnosis
Doctor :   A better one would be a Transvaginal Ultrasound scan
Doctor :   The reference range means the values which are considered normal under provided conditions
User :   but I thought anything less than 5 means a negative pregnancy result?
User :   ok so I may not be pregnant correct?
Doctor :   If it is less than 5 then the pregnancy is not a chance as such levels are normally seen
Doctor :   and in females who have attained menopause the normal level will be around 10
User :   okay
Doctor :   Can you type the test report completely to me ?
Doctor :   If its a soft copy you could mail me to
User :   Test name: Hcg, Total, QN In Range Out of Range
Doctor :   ok , so 458 is the result reading right ?
User :   Test Name In Range Out of Range Reference Range Hcg, Total, Qn 458 mIU/mL Reference Range Nonpregnant or premenopausal User :   yes it says out of range 458 h
User :   and anything
Doctor :   anything above 5 is considered pregnancy positive
User :   so what does the 458 h mean? I'm just so confused : (
User :   I'm 21 years
User :   old
Doctor :   yes, less than 5 rule out pregnancy
User :   : )
Doctor :   yes, I will explain you clearly
Doctor :   The HCG is considered pregnancy hormone , it is produced in good amounts only during pregnancy. But some small amounts are present in the blood even when there is no pregnancy where the levels will be less than 5... And anything more than 5 is considered pregnancy. Since in you there is history of a missed period and the HCG values are very high 458 , this will confirm the fact that you are pregnant
User :   So Even if I am 2 weeks pregnant will it still be possible to determined those high hcg values?
Doctor :   I shall share a link with you which gives a good and detailed information on the age of pregnancy and the HCG levels
User :   and I should ignore the
Doctor :   yes, its just for refernce
Doctor :   its not anywhere related to you are your blood sample
User :   that's what I'm not getting because i looked it up and it says at 2 weeks i should be between 5-50 hcg levels but it's saying I have 458 at 2 weeks?
User :   I just dont understand why it just doesnt say just a plain negative or positive...
Doctor :   no , according to the reference , in two week pregnant the values will be 3 to 426
Doctor :   I understand the anxiety you are in
User :   i'm not between those numbers
Doctor :   To sum up based on the report and the history I can say you are pregnant
User :   oh wow : /
User :   Is there a chance the results can be false since it's so early to tell?
Doctor :   well 458 is slightly above the range but well fits into a 2 weeker range which is 3 to 426
User :   ok
Doctor :   Please go through the tabel pof reference values ( p112
Doctor :   ) in the above link i provided you
Doctor :   I am afraid no , the tests techniques are very sensitive specially those to estimate the HCG
Doctor :   hence the chances of false negative are less\
User :   ok thank you very much
User :   : )
Doctor :   You are welcome
Doctor :   take care
