I have a 2yr 11 month old male son who has been coughing since april of this year at times with a nasal discharge. He was diagnosed by a pediatrician over a month ago as having an ear infection which progressed after a failure of oral antibiotics to a mastoid infection behind the right ear that included four days in childrens hospital and surgery.
The doctors told me the coughing was just a cold, and not to worry. After IV antibiotics, and upon discharge more antibiotics, this kid is still coughing and it is persistent(nose not runny lately). I have raised three other children and I am positive this kid does not have a cold in the least bit. His blood test in the hospital showed streptococas pnemonue(spell check broken).
He is going back to the pediatrician tomorrow. I feel strongly he has acute sinusitis and want an objective opinion. He has no fever(yet) full of energy and a typical boy, but the cough is driving us crazy and after four months I'm tired of placating the doctor with his it's just a cold. It's not. My second guess would be an allergy. I live in and we have a lot of allergans here, but after this long I think it is acute
User :   what do u think doc...
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   let me read
Doctor :   he deesent have fever ?
Doctor :   doesent*
User :   When he had the ear infection he had a fever for almost a month, but we have only been off antibiotics a week or so and right now no signs of that but contiues to cough that sounds productive like he has mucus down there
Doctor :   when is the cough more during the day or in the night or early in morning and evening times
User :   A little at night, but I hear it mostly during the daytime. Definitely in the evenings.
Doctor :   what is the color of the sputum ?
User :   well like I said the last few days he hasn't had a runny nose just the cough and sounds like he is mouth breathing.
User :   breathing. then it was clear mucus coming out of nose
User :   earlier it was clear mucus
Doctor :   ok
User :   before his surgery
Doctor :   this is not acute sinusitis
Doctor :   rather it seems like an bronchitis which may be allergic in nature
User :   do you think an allergist would be helpful
User :   im afraid this could be fatal if it's not diagnosed before something else happens
Doctor :   as of now the airway needs to be kept patent and secondarily inection need to be avoided
Doctor :   this is not fatal
Doctor :   it is a more common problem
User :   im just concerned that when he does get a common cold it can get out of control
Doctor :   apart from the regular treatment from the paediati=rician
Doctor :   yea the allergic specalist will be of help to you
User :   right now he doesnt spit anything up so we arent sure what color the mucus is because for a few days his nose has been clear
Doctor :   ok
User :   do you think the cough is from drainage from the nose into the larnax
Doctor :   the cough is because of the irritant air passage
User :   i know for sure his nose is clogged up because he is mouth breathing
