User :   My son requires tonsillectomy. I would like to know whether it is advisable to remove the full tonsils or partial. My son is only 5 years old. As per the doctors is adenoids are enlarged. And the tonsils are also enlarged thus having a narrowed air passage.
Doctor :   hi
User :   hi
Doctor :   DR. XXXXXXXX here. let me read what you have typed.
User :   ok
Doctor :   if both tonsils and adenoids are a problem, then you can opt for both a tonsillectomy involving removal of entire tonsils along with removal of Adenoids
User :   They will remove the Adenoids. My concern is the Tonsils. Should the remove them completely or partially?
Doctor :   it should be removed totally
Doctor :   as partial removal can cause them to enlarge again
Doctor :   causing the symptoms to return back after few years.
User :   what is the chance or approximate probablity for them to enlarge again?
Doctor :   almost 80% chances are there that they will grow back
User :   how long does it take to grow back?
User :   e.g. 1 month, 1 year etc
Doctor :   it depends on person to person. some children have it grown back within 6 months post surgery, some after 1-2 years
Doctor :   it should be removed in total which is always beneficial
Doctor :   else it would require another surgery later in life
Doctor :   to remove it again
User :   what are the different surgical procdure you recommend. I have heard the classical/conventional surgery is the main way. other ways are via radiation, laser and likewise. what would you recommend?
Doctor :   usually the classical one is better in children
User :   what is the usefulness of tonsil if any?
Doctor :   the usefulness of tonsils is to filter infection in the oropharyngeal cavity
Doctor :   it is something like the lymph nodes
User :   so if we remove the filter are there not more chances for diseases to enter the body?
Doctor :   but when the problems due to it becomes more, it is better to remove it fully
Doctor :   at this stage, the other lymph nodes take over the filtering function
Doctor :   so do not worry about the infections
Doctor :   have you followed what I have said?
User :   wouldn't the probablity increase of become ill or severly sick e.g. like sever colds?
User :   Yes, I am following what you have said so far.
Doctor :   it will be as normal as the other people
Doctor :   it wil not increase
