User :   I have a persistent ache at the joint of the thumb and the wrist on my right hand

User :   wanted to know what could be the reason for it

User :   it hurts when i lift a laptop for eg, or if i do a handshake

User :   it hurts more at such times.. else there is a dull pain

User :   the pain is there in hte entire thumb area and more on the joint.. if that helps :)

User :   yes.. but it hurts

User :   i can put the fingers on the thumb... but when i try to enclose it, it hurts

User :   a little.. on the thumb bone

User :   yes.. at the joint

User :   nope..
Doctor :   ok You could be having a condition called dequervains tenosynovitis
Doctor :   does the pain radiate have u noticed?
User :   ok.. what does it mean in lay man's terms? :)
Doctor :   it is a small problem
User :   sometimes towards the forearm.. in the area below the wrist joint
Doctor :   where there is inflamation of the tendon sheath
User :   oh ok...

User :   and what can be done to cure it?
User :   ya understood
Doctor :   repeated use of your thumb could be causing this
User :   married to a doc.. so understand that much :)
Doctor :   do you text a lot using your cell phone?
User :   used to not now
Doctor :   ok this could be a cause
User :   hmm.. so what do i do?
Doctor :   avoid repetative thumb movements whenever possible
Doctor :   try to give adequate rest to your thumb and wrist
Doctor :   immobilising your thumb and wrist and keeping them straight using a splint may also help if the pain is really bad

Doctor :   for that you will have to consult an orthopaedician
Doctor :   also you could take pain killers in case your pain is really bad
Doctor :   avoid pinching with your thumb
User :   ok.. but will this go away if i give as much rest to the thumb and wrist?
