Doctor :   since you have had a history of thyroid dysfunction , most probably hypothyroidism
User :   yes
Doctor :   i would want to tell you that thyroid also contributes to weight gain and menstrual disturbances
Doctor :   along with this you also have been diagnosed with PCOD which is also a cause for the above
Doctor :   so there are two significant reasons to explain your weight gain and irregular cycles
Doctor :   thyroid needs continuos medicines and regular thyroid hormone assessments and dose modifications
Doctor :   if the hormones are under control the doctor will slowly taper the dose and stop medicines
Doctor :   so , I would suggest you keep testing the levels as suggested
Doctor :   and get it under control
Doctor :   this will solve the first reason for weight gain
Doctor :   coming to pcod
Doctor :   this is a very common problem seen in young women of your age
Doctor :   i presume the doctor has done some hormone tests and ultrasound as well
User :   yes
Doctor :   the treatment for this includes lifestyle modifications , in diet , exercise and stress reduction
Doctor :   along with this you may need hormones and medicines like METFORMIN if the doctor advises on
Doctor :   with medicines and life style modifications , the cycles improve
User :   metformin?
Doctor :   once the hormones level come under control , the weight loss also will happen quickly
Doctor :   that is a drug generally given in pcod , if the doctor feels there is a significant imbalance
Doctor :   if not recommended , do not owrry about it
Doctor :   worry*
