I went to the obgyn today with symtoms of a uti and she ended up doing an ultrasound and concluded I had a ruptured Ovarian cyst. She told me it was no big deal and that the fluid would be absorbed. I came home to research online and found that is considered to be very serious and can be life threatening. She never mentioned this. Should I go to the er to be evaluated?? I am in pain and very worried now.
Doctor :   Let me read it
Doctor :
May I know the size of the cyst said on the U/S
User :   she did not say. She just told me there was free fluid that she could see
Doctor :   Before I give you better and specific answers I would like to know more about you.
User :   everything I've read online says it's a very serious thing
Doctor :   What is your age?
User :   25
Doctor :
Do you have regular menstrual periods?
User :   yes
Doctor :
Are you on any medicines like BCP?
User :   no
Doctor :
Ok
User :   does it depend on the size of the cyst?
Doctor :   Yes the size of the cyst and the type of the cyst
Doctor :
Most women at your age have functional cysts ( follicular variety)
Doctor :
that disappear naturally in one to three months.
User :   the thing that concerns me is that she did not mention any risks with the condition
Doctor :   Although they can rupture (usually without ill effects), they rarely cause symptoms.
Doctor :   Since you do not have any symptoms right now it is taken as a benign follicular cyst which is small or medium sized
User :   what would the symptoms be??
Doctor :
They are benign and have no real medical consequence.
Doctor :   Excruciating abdominal pain
Doctor :
Nausea or vomiting
User :   I have lots of pain and have felt sick the past few days
User :   I am about to start my period though so I am not sure if it's just menstrual related pain
Doctor :
Do you have menstrual pain
Doctor :
normally
Doctor :
so you can relate the pain to it
User :   so to cause an infection it depends on the type of cyst which is usually much larger?
Doctor :   Do you have pain during sexual intercourse ( if yur are sexually active)

User :   I hadn't really at all until the last couple of months which my doctor said was probably caused by the cyst
User :   yes, I had been having pain during intercourse
Doctor :
Ok
Doctor :
What I expect is a rupture of follicular type ovarian cyst in you
Doctor :
which are benign and do not cause any worrisome problems
Doctor :
But all depends on the size of the cyst and the contents of it, if it is a clear fluid as in follicular variety
Doctor :
it collect at the back of the rectum
Doctor :
and no harm as they get absorbed slowly over a period of time
User :   the last few days my urine has been very clear would the rupture contribute to that?
Doctor :
Not reallyu
User :   I haven't really increased my water intake and it's usually not that clear
Doctor :
I think the free fluid is very minimal and clear that is why your Ob&Gyn was unconcerned
User :   What type of doctor are you?
Doctor :
One more important thing is you should not be perturbed by the information that is given on the internet
Doctor :
They cause more of panic and pain than easing your mind
User :   this is true
Doctor :
If you are still more concerned I would recommend you take a second opinion from our panel of Gynecologist
Doctor :
WWW.WWWW.WW Doctor :
You can take the help through an email or by phone
User :   you can call at this hour?
Doctor :
Yes
Doctor :
within an hour or two
User :   does it cost more money?
Doctor :
Yes these things are very nominal
Doctor :
and the consultants come out of the busy schedule to give their opinion
User :   so you do not recommend I go the er
Doctor :
I do not as you do not have any symptom that is worrisome
User :   so vomiting-unbearable pain and anything else? those are the symptoms ?
Doctor :   irregular periods
User :   anything I should really pay attention to?
Doctor :
fever
Doctor :
It would be good if you can take the report of the Ultrasound from your Doctor on request and send it to us
Doctor :
The Ultrasound report is the key here saying the size and the content of the cyst
User :   when you say irregular periods does that mean complications could arise a few months from now if it were a serious rupture?
Doctor :   Yes

User :   if it already ruptured how would she know the size? by the amount of fluid? is it approximate?
Doctor :   Yes

Doctor :
She should have done an earlier ultrasound?
Doctor :
or only one?
User :   only one...just because I was in so much pain
Doctor :
Okay
User :   my urinalysis came back negative for a uti so she wanted to try and figure out what else it could be
Doctor :
do you mean the pain?
User :   ?
Doctor :
Do you mean the origin of pain, was she trying to find out the cause of the pain?
Doctor :
apart from the ruptured ovarian cyst
User :   I came in complaining of abdomen pain and back pain. she did a clean catch urine test and it came back negative for uti so she wanted to do the ultrasound to see if she could find anything and that's when she found the fluid
Doctor :
Ok
Doctor :
The common causes of the severe abdominal pain are
Doctor :
Urinary problems, Menstrual pain, Endometriosis, Ruptured Ovarian cysts, Obstructive constipation, Ectopic pregnancy
Doctor :
So almost all are ruled out with Urine preg test, Urinalysis, Ultrasound
Doctor :
the only thing that remained in her mind was the Ectopic pregnancy
Doctor :
sorry not ectopic, ruptured ovarian
Doctor :
cyst
User :   so if I had an ectopic pregnancy she would see it w/ the ultrasound right?
Doctor :
*Sorry, it is Ruptured Ovarian cyst
Doctor :
not ectopic
Doctor :
Yes ectopic can be made out by Ultrasound
User :   if she wasn't looking for it could she miss it?
Doctor :   Actually ectopic pregnancy is first checked with Urine preg test
Doctor :
If it is negative then they wont have that in mind while scanning
Doctor :
Cannot you get a copy or report of your Ultrasound lower abdomen?
User :   when they test your urine do they automatically check to see if your pregnant?
Doctor :
I am not sure about the routine urine tests in your country, but they do not in this part of the world
User :   where are you located?
Doctor :   India
User :   I think I can get a copy
User :   of the ultrasound
Doctor :
Great
User :   I can call her tom. what are some questions I should ask?
Doctor :
Result of the Urinalysis and the Ultrasound scan done
Doctor :
If you wish you can take the opinion of our Gynecologist with the report you send
Doctor :

If you wish I can pay back your money provided you take her opinion since you still have questions left in your mind
Doctor :   My opinion after chatting with you is a benign problem
User :   I have a blood disorder...could that effect the outcome
User :   ?
Doctor :
What is that?
User :   My blood doesn't clot properly and I can bleed out too much
Doctor :
Please wait a minute
User :   I am missing a chromosome and need transfusions when I get surgery
Doctor :   ok
Doctor :
This problem is not specifically worrisome
Doctor :
But you do not need surgery
Doctor :   Please check for symptoms for one more month
Doctor :
It should not be worse than what is now
Doctor :
If it is worse then you need a reevaluation
Doctor :
SInce the cyst has ruptured
Doctor :
the pain shall subside in few days and should not re appear if the pain was solely because of the ovarian cyst or its rupture.
Doctor :   Are you with me?
User :   yes
Doctor :   Did you follow?
User :   yes- I'm just worried
User :   thank you for your help
Doctor :
Please fill the feedback say done when done
Doctor :
Thanks for consulting
Doctor :
Bye for now.
