User :   Hello, I have been back at the gym again after a long hiatus. Four or five days ago I was doing leg presses. I have had a sore left knee for some time now and i figured the leg presses would help. Now my left shin is very numb. There is no pain, but it is numb. What have i done?
Doctor :   Hi
User :   Hi Doc!!
Doctor :   May I know your age?
User :   yes I am 47
Doctor :   Since when are you having this numbness?
User :   I think it was caused by the heavy leg presses that I did about four days ago. The numbness started shortly after this.
Doctor :   And can you describe the exact location where the numbness is restricted?
Doctor :   Did you injury yourself during the exercise?
User :   It is directly in the front shin area of the left leg. just below the knee and 3/4 of the way down the front.
User :   I do not recall feeling an injury during exercise, but my left knee had been bothering me prior to returning back to the gym.
Doctor :   Are you able to move your ankle and foot well?
Doctor :   Are you able to move your left big toe up?
User :   Yes, there is no restriction or swelling or pain. just a wierd numbness
User :   yes I can move my big toe up
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   Has the numbness improved or worsened since the last 4 days?
Doctor :   Do you have any other medical problems such as diabetes, hypertension, thyroid problems, past history of trauma to the leg?
User :   it appears to slightly improve at rest, but for example i just returned from my day at work and it is numb
User :   no mediacl problems at all. i am slightly over weight this is why i am back at the gym.
Doctor :   Have you had similar symptoms in the past?
User :   I did break this leg when i was 15 right at the bottom of the femur where it meats the knee at the growth plate. i was in a spike cast for 10 weeks.
User :   no similar symtoms in the past.
Doctor :   Do you consume alcohol/smoke/use illicit drugs?
User :   no. in the hopes of not being rude. what the heck does this have to do with the shin numbness
Doctor :   Let me explain to you.
Doctor :   Numbness on the shin area - concentrated on the upper- lateral area just below the knee can occur due to common peroneal nerve stretching/injury.
Doctor :   This however is not that common unless there is a traumatic event such as a fracture.
Doctor :   Other causes for such symptoms are
Doctor :   stress and anxiety giving rise to functional problems.
Doctor :   And very rarely such symptoms can be due sensory neuropathy which are normally secondary to diabetes, alcohol and occasionally with certain drug usage.
Doctor :   I hope you are not a regular alcohol consumer or on any drugs.
Doctor :   With the details that you have mentioned,
User :   i believe I may have injured myself during or before workout. my knee was already sore prior to engaging in workout
User :   I promise I am not a drug user or an alcoholic. i barely drink at all.
Doctor :   That is ok.
Doctor :   Now analyzing your problem,
Doctor :   absence of pain and swelling are against the diagnosis of traumatic event.
Doctor :   And since you do not have any other factors,
Doctor :   it could be a functional one secondary to stress and anxiety.
Doctor :   However let me suggest the measures that should guide.
Doctor :   1. Watch out for the progress of the condition.
Doctor :   development of ankle and toe weakness is an alarming sign.
Doctor :   2. Good rest, proper sleep and no further straining will help.
Doctor :   3. You need vitamin supplements containing vitamin B12
Doctor :   Vitamin B12 supplements are egg, meat and vegetables.
Doctor :   alternatively, you can use multivitamin supplements one capsule a day.
Doctor :   4. If the symptoms are persisting, or if you develop fresh weakness you will need physical examination by a neurologist and Nerve conduction studies.
Doctor :   Have you followed what I have suggested?
User :   I think I will fllow up with my GP. Thanks!!
Doctor :   Thanks for consulting me.
Doctor :   Bye for now.
