User :   Hi,I had a severe nose bleed this morning, lost a lot of blood. I am 60 years old and this is the first nose Bleed ever.Since then I have noticed a thick swollen vein on the back of my right hand.Is this normal?
Doctor :   Hi
Doctor :   Do you sustain an injury?
User :   No
Doctor :   Do you have hypertension?
Doctor :   *High Blood pressure?
User :   Yes I take Irbesarten 1 daily
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   Let me brief you.
Doctor :   Sudden onset epistaxis(nasal bleeding) occur commonly secondary to 2 causes
Doctor :   1. Trauma/nose picking
Doctor :   2. Hypertension.
Doctor :   Since there was no trauma, I suggest that you check your BP as soon as possible.
Doctor :   Epistaxis can be a sign of your BP going high.
Doctor :   If your blood pressure is under normal limits, then you need not concern.
User :   It is usually stable with my current medication but I had major stress yesterday from one source and another and I was shaky last night
Doctor :   Are you on any antiplatelet medications such as aspirin or an anticoagulants such as warf, acitrom?
User :   No
Doctor :   Ok
Doctor :   In that case, get your BP checked as soon as possible.
Doctor :   If BP is under normal limits, then this isn't a concerning problem.
User :   OK should I go to the surgery as I do not have the facility at home to check my BP
Doctor :   However getting a BP recorded during the time of nasal bleeding is absolutely necessary.
User :   Does the vein swelling have anything to do with the nose bleed?
Doctor :   Vein engorgement occurs due to increase in venous blood filling.
User :   I Dont know what that means, is it just a coincidence that it has occurred?
Doctor :   If it isn't secondary to high BP, then it was just a coincidental finding.
Doctor :   Hence I strongly recommend you to check your BP first.
Doctor :   Have you followed what i have suggested?
User :   Yes I have
User :   Could this be fatal
Doctor :   The severity of the condition depends on the blood pressure recording.
User :   and if it is exceptionally high?
Doctor :   Very high BP referred to as accelerated hypertension can affect vision, kidney functions, and the potentially dangerous condition such as brain hemorrhage.
User :   OK thanks for all your advice I am going to the surgery today. Can this be treated?
Doctor :   Yes.
User :   Thank you
Doctor :   This can be treated, but blood pressure regulation is the essential treatment.
User :   OK I will take you advice. Thank you very much. x
Doctor :   Thanks for consulting me.
Doctor :   Bye for now.
Doctor :   Wish you good health.
Doctor :   Happy Christmas and New Year in advance.
User :   Merry Christmas to you too.
